bath, maine, that is...

You know how those Appalachian types save Saturday nights for their bath? Well, I was in Bath this past Saturday, and...

Front Street, a look downtown with the famed Bath Iron Works crane in the distance...

The Patten Free Library on the left; the old Bath Y being the brick building down the hill on the right...

The park in front of the library...

The old Carlton Bridge (with the stantions) and that, uhm, newer bridge in front of it...

Bath Iron Works at night.

And for an afternoon, the 70s were today.

spot on, i'd say...

Just when you thought it was safe to hate on John McCain:
I must say, I'm a little envious. If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed.

It must be exciting for you ... in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks.

ah, the illusion...

By exercising daily I can make myself look 28 again, eh? Ah, yes! '89 was indeed the summer of love. Oddly, however, if I can but gaze upon a lovely creature, who is, say, cavorting about a small stage before a few mirrors and lights while applying her considerable talents against, say again, a brass pole, then, by Jesus! -- I don't know what it is! -- I just have to satisfy this abrupt desire to go push some weights; stretch out on a soft but firm elastic ball; ride a reclining stationary cycle -- we've all seen the footage, am I not coherent here?

My god, this girl is an athlete: muscular and strong, though soft and aloof; magnificently proportioned; mesmerizing...  climbing and twirling and gyrating, gently levelling, landing. It's all so sublimely rich and luxuriant, even as my dollar bills vanish before my eyes. And when her distant pupils turn to focus on mine, I am made as lost -- in an abyss, in a dream, in a lie.

And here I am now at my table, watching her stand in line for her coffee or her tea and her cookie. She wears her glasses invitingly, along the bridge leaving her baby blues unobstructed, looking academic. She may never have existed before this moment but she's here now.

Or she's over there.

I'll be off to the gym now.

from your other office...

The recession is an easy hook upon which to hang a hat of unemployment. Ergo, your operations, not to mention your backside, can be found at the local internet cafes: L'il Dog in Brunswick, and, today, Cafe Creme in Bath -- your offices, I see. In between I'll find you at the Y either in the post-nautilus area or in the pool, and, hey!, sometimes in the gym shooting baskets (no running, thank you, time & gravity & friction!).

Meanwhile, you crank out emails w/resume attached to various leads on Craigslist; making appointments with agencies in Portland, and, starting Monday, Bath/Brunswick. The disability income is no more and the savings is winnowing now that coverage has been marked for Cobra retroactive to the end of February, all of which is decidely more expensive and carrying with it no regard for your elegibility for unemployment. Is any of this supposed to make sense?

Oh, forgot to mention the insurance company decided to cover but 1/5 of the hospitalization.

Other'n that, you're fine!

iraqi soldiers want the *republicans* out...

... not that there's anything wrong with that...
“Just to be perfectly clear here, I did ask them are you following any of the republican candidates?…Do you want to talk about John McCain? Within that whole group, not one wanted a republican in the US presidential seat. They were all for a democrat. They were all for that type of change because they said they were living a republican war.”
Would surely like to see Barack Obama pound McCain over the head with this, i.e., after he beats Hillary's ass.

----------
Update:  so the emphasis of this story isn't lost on the slower of wit: the iraqi soldiers didn't say they wanted americans out, so much as republicans...

finally, something we all got in common...

Benen gets the gold star...
So, McCain needs an insurance policy. If conditions on the ground in Iraq offer some optimism, he can tell voters, “See? I was right; all we need to do is stay the course and reap the rewards.” If conditions are deteriorating, he can tell voters, “See? I was right; our enemies are acting up to influence the U.S. elections. They’re afraid I’ll win and keep Bush’s policy going indefinitely, so they’re sending a message.”

Heads I win, tails you lose.

another saturday night...

It is good to see some of my friends and family check in, by way of my blog, to see how I'm doing. They can call me on my cell of course, but burning minutes isn't always the best way to say, I'm fine, how're you? How's the wife. And the kids? -- you know the drill.

The short of it is I'm getting better. My last visit to the cardiologist was precisely that, I fear: my last. The insurance is expired, this after getting 12 weeks beyond my departure from work in order to visit a hospital room for 9 nights & 10 days back in December. Since then, I've been taking my meds semi-religiously, maybe missing all of two days total. The cardiologist expressed a smile when I told him I'm getting bills from the hospital now, charging me $441 for everytime I visit him. Geez! The EKG takes all of, what, 30 seconds? "Is that what it costs to see me?" he says. "Gonna have to ask for a raise."

"Don't do that," I tell 'im, "they'll only jack me higher."

Christ! I could pay less for more quality time with an escort. And, uhm, hmm... There's an idea.

He was stoic when I said I didn't know when I could come back in. "Well, our door is always open."

Yah, thanks, doc. Check ya' later on the driving range, eh?

So I've just received my last disability check and now I'll have to switch over to Cobra, payments of which will raise me from $120 to, ballpark, $400-a-month. Love that American health coverage -- not!

But I have a month's worth of meds with renewal for another month, but the doc was emphatic when he suggested I shouldn't continue unobserved, i.e., without a doctor advising me along the way. I interpret that to mean I shouldn't continue at all. Just drop dead, eh? I mean, my hospital bills are coming in like snowflakes on an impending Nor'easter, and I haven't even seen the bill for the cardioversion procedure I underwent a few weeks ago. Should be for a few grand, I'd bet. Meanwhile, moths fly out & about whenever I open my wallet. Did you not hear me say "disability??"

I smile as I rue my situation. It's all so sublime. The credit cards are shelved. Everybody wants a piece of my buhttox for lack of the greenbacks forthcoming. I watch Hillary pound her "Universal! Health! Care!" mantra, knowing well how full of shit she is. The Clinton motus operandi is to capitulate well before they have to and get less for the people than they could have. And this was before she was #2 on the insurance industry's Christmas card list. Bottom line for America, my good people, is that outstanding medical balances will ever exceed the coverage they ought otherwise to provide. And she insists it to be "affordable." Like, big good goddamn deal!

Ah, the white tea at the Little Dog is, at least, some comfort. Shame the place closes in 3 minutes.

Coming to you from Brunswick, Maine, now. My mom's dying of cancer and she has anytime from now to a year from now. In any event, I'm to look after her, for her, for the siblings... and for me. I'm available and I'm here. There it is. Put me to use.

She still provides professional counseling services, although now, given her elderly status, its for gratus, or pro bono, or for free. In any event, I'm to be out of the house when she is seeing patients. All well and good, I like it here at the Little Dog Cafe, and Brunswick is a charming little town. Let's see what one can make of that, shall we?

[T]he object of Specter's NFL ire has been the NFL Network and its exclusive relationship with DirecTV. The Philadelphia-based Comcast cable company is in a war with the NFL over whether they can charge their customers for the NFL Network, unlike DirecTV.
Uh huh! Doing the bidding of another fascist, anti-net neutrality media corp.

Obama to win Texas and Vermont; Hillary, Ohio & Rhode Island. So it is written, etc.

Given her endorsement of John McCain over Barack Obama, or her hemming & hawing on whether he's a Muslim or not, or her piling on when John McCain conspires with the right-wing Canadian prime minister to take down a fellow Democrat and fellow American, I reckon I don't have to say, "She's a Republican, ferChrissakes!" and be seen as barking up the wrong tree.

somebody had t'be...

Rewriting some text and came across this piece on da Vinci. I was impressed:
Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the "Renaissance man" or universal genius, a man whose seemingly infinite curiosity was equalled only by his powers of invention. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived.
So I was just thinking: Would I prefer to be known as this or as something more akin to, say, the Son of God?

I mean, it's, like, a toss-up.

begging the question as to whom, or what, was crispier, dali or the lobster... ?

From Wiki:
Lobster Telephone (also known as Aphrodisiac Telephone) is a surrealist object, created by Salvador Dalí in 1936. Dalí wrote of lobsters and telephones in his book The Secret Life, demanding to know why, when he asked for a grilled lobster in a restaurant, he was never presented with a telephone.
I've often wondered the same thing.

the enemy of my enemy...

Wow! John McCain has, like, totally stepped into a big pile of inorganic biofudge:
According to [Catholic League Blowhole Bill] Donohue, Hagee has "made a lot of money off bashing the Catholic Church and blames Catholics for the Holocaust." What does it say about McCain that he would embrace such a figure? "This doesn't speak well for him. He's tolerating an endorsement by an inveterate bigot, and it's been brought to his attention."
Here're the strait-talker's options: 1) He doesn't repudiate Hagee and he loses the Catholic and, by extension, the, uhm, Latino vote... BIG time! (And do we really fear traditional media will ignore the bellowings of Bill Donohue?); or 2) He does repudiate Hagee, losing his money & organization while getting hammered by him, as well as by those other blowholes Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity, essentially the Republican base.

Of course this is fresh off McCain throwing that Cunningham bozo under the clown car.

Here's betting they bring back the Morman.

another one bites the dust...

William F. Buckley: 1925 - 2008

Have to acknowledge this cat as I actually enjoyed listening to him talk. Rather than say things like, "Well, that's confusing," or "I find that bewildering," he'd say something more like, "I must confess to a certain mystification."

Was just listening to a soundbite on the radio on the way home: Michael Medved, dipstick extraordinaire, said of Buckley that he personified the concept of "intellectual" and "conservative" as not being a contradiction in terms. Well mebbe so, but Medved and his lot are doing their damnedest to put the lie to that.

----------
Update: Back in '88, Buckley was given a good pasting by none other than Al Gore; this being at a Democratic primary debate, Buckley was the moderator. The question had to do with Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, a.k.a., SDI, a.k.a., Star Wars. Buckley saw fit to challenge Gore w/a follow-up question. Gore was on his game, however, and after a few back-&-forths, Buckley said, "We have to move on," to which Gore retorted, "I don't blame you!" That was when I realized Gore had something to bring to the table.

Come to think of it, even Mike Dukakis had a good debate that night. Go figure!

gee... ! it's g.e. bringing "good things" to light again..

I'm trying to plug in to Olberman's vids from tonight's show. This is what I get:
To watch video in the new MSNBC.com player, you will need to update your version of the Adobe Flash Player.
Then it provides instructions on how to quickly install the device.

And then Dubya and Dick and the Department of "Justice" will have you by the short-hairs. The business of surveillance has only begun, and one ought know that even if an Obama were to become president, the Oligarchy simply could not allow him to dismantle that which they've so painstakingly constructed. Consequently, then, the safest among us will be forever on the move and without various electronics dangling from our ears or off the limbs. But then we'd also be the nobodies with no ability to communicate with others -- have an influence on our own direction; an influence, maybe, on civilization's.

Just getting plugged in.

So what one must do is allow General Electronic -- a fairly entrenched multi-national conglomerate, who owns MSNBC, and who, by the way, is getting obscenely and filthily wealthier by the nano second off the fighting and dying in the Middle East -- plug into your laptop, maybe drop an interactive virus that will record your every keystroke, maybe concoct a few itself, send the report to Room Such & Such at AT&T in San Francisco (for a fee of course), who in turn forks over your interpreted proclivities to this government entity, ensconced somewhere between Baltimore & Washington city, believing itself as having to do with the nation's security. Oh wait! That'd be national security, which, we all have come to glumly realize, has nothing to do with our nation's security.

Sorry, my bad!

Which is all well and good, my friends, that is if you cannot handle having your freedoms.

But, just an example: What if you like to look at Erotica?

Guys!?

$40 Billion dollars worth of Erotica -- okay, Porn! -- gets consumed in the U.S. every year, conservatively speaking. And if you -- Guys!? -- step outta line, say, a little too too... ??

So many ways to fuck you over. Small wonder we're already the most incarcerated nation in the world today. But, y'know, no problem! You're a nobody -- not even on the radar.

But what if you're a gifted orator running for a high office? Hm?

You remember that Hoover kept Kennedy in line, yes? Kept his affairs out of the press. Strong-arming those in the know with a mind to share, all because J.Edgar & Jack were, like, tight, right?

Is how J.Edgar kept his job, you see, for as long as he could and all the while with Bobby hating his intestines.

And in the meantime, he somehow got a whole building named after his cross-dressing self.

Now that's Pornography!

"Do you trust the intelligence community more than you trust Democrats who are beholden to their left-wing?"
Speaking as a so-called left-wing blogger (who, in reality, is actually conservatively progressive and/or progressively conservative):

"Fuck No!"

And whyyyyy don't I trust the intelligence community more than Democrats beholden to the left-wing?? Well, I figure Dubya puts it best hisself:
"[F]ool me once, shame on ... shame on you. It fool me. We can't get fooled again."

An update to a story on which I blogged, figuring it to be metaphoric of Dubya's world:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs.
All of which begs the question of how bad the situation had to be to get Bush's cronies to actually do the right thing.

grand state of maine...

Ah, well! Having belched out my latest conspiracy theory in the previous post, I am most pleased to link to:
A huge victory for Obama in Maine. Final results still to come, but it's a landslide."
Welcome to Hillary's lost weekend!

----------
Update: Maine's turnout is described as "incredible." Could it be the excitation of making history with these choices for nominee? Or could it also be what we'd get more readily if we moved elections from Tuesday to Sunday nationwide?

Anyways:
The state's Democrats overlooked the snowy weather and turned out in heavy numbers for municipal gatherings.
It was snowing here in Western Mass today. It was blustery and bitter. Almost invariably, meanwhile, the snowfalls in Maine are heavier and more insufferable. So as I've already had to deal with my heaviest winter in years, while staying for a few weeks in Brunswick, that is after my stay in the hospital, I must say I've grown to appreciate what it means to be a Maineiac this time of year. They are a stout-hearted lot with big ol' rubber boots!!

Makes this expatriate Maineiac mighty proud! Ayuh!

no longer the age of reason...

Axiomatic? A black American president will, not might be, assassinated. Or so it would seem to be widely believed. For example:
Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing believes Barack Obama would be assassinated if he were elected U.S. president, the British writer said in a newspaper interview.
It stands to reason inasmuch Bush's America is a sick, obsessive and violent culture. And as Lessing suggests, Obama, as a presumptive nominee, scares a lot of the darker demons out on the prowl. Later in the piece, she suggests he should in any event have Hillary as his #2.

Given the antipathy she engenders, are we talking some kind of insurance policy?

----------
Update: Answering that last question: Uhh, No! Those most likely to take out a black president and who could get at him would likely be the same who are frightened of any reversal of corporate welfare policies and its accompanying obscene profits (It's not personal, it's just business.), and not the unhinged, though assuredly very lone white supremist everybody'd figure to be in the equation.

And we all know the corporate demons just lovvvvve Hillary.

P.S., Of course, all this doesn't mean an Exxon or a Haliburton wouldn't hire one of, say, Blackwater's grandest dragons, likely for Christ, who just happens to be handy with an M40. That'd be them hedging their bet.

that's entertainment...

Received an email from the HAMster this afternoon; rare reader hereabouts he, but wanting desperately to feel my pain over the imperfection that was yesterday's Superbowl blowhole.

Here it is: Oh Well!

As I had been hitherto made pleased, but not deleriously so, by the Sox winning the Series last October, so am I not so wantonly devastated the Pats couldn't hold the line against a most ferocious Giants pass rush. I dunno, maybe 3 Superbowl titles and 2 World Series crowns in the last 6 years, not to mention 3 NBA flags in the 80s, which seem like yesterday to me (one of which I witnessed from the press box with locker room access), isn't enough for the next greedy fucker. But me? I think I've grown a little desensitized by the multiple orgasms.

So, like, Oh Well!

Look, kids, I'm pushing 50 and Lord knows I've had my share of ups & downs as a Boston sports fan. The game yesterday enabled me to invite a friend and his lady to my brother's house to see both the brothers and their kin; slap some hootin' & hollerin' 5s with 'em when Brady hooked up with Moss one last time in the endzone; wonder what in hell Belichick was doing channelling Marty Schottenheimer by going for a 4th & 13 instead of letting his kicker go for 3 on the 49 or by not throwing the challenge flag on an apparent fumble recovery that should've been ruled down-by-contact -- I mean WTF, Bill??; and fall out of our chairs when Manning got away from the Pats' rush and finally connected with Plaxico for the winner.

We drank a little, ate a lot, goofed on the commercials (by the by, the interrupting shirt stain was by far the funniest comm) and a halftime filled with Tom Petty. 'Course the Pats might be confused as the Heartbreakers by hungover New Englanders this day.

But as the man said: Oh Blasted Well!

Sports is entertainment. The game was highly entertaining. The boy got his money's worth. Had a good time. Lovin' the family! Life is short! Get along, li'l doagy!

18-1 is what it is, then. Still more wins in a season than hanybody ever before. My cup has been runneth over.

Congrats to the J'ints and their fans!

Pitchers & catchers later this month. But, uhm, maybe I'll be reading s'more books -- y'know?

P.S. to Hammie & Chaatoes: Sorry to take the wind outta yer sails, fellahs! No gnashing of teeth to be had here.

And HOW 'BOUT 'DEM REDSKINS!?

the hearts & minds -- remember... ?

Obama Would Hold Muslim Summit
Muslim and Western leaders would be invited to the summit for "a discussion about how we can prevent the widening misunderstandings and gaps between the Muslim world and the West," Obama said in the interview to Paris Match.

"I will ask them to join us in battling terrorism but we should also be willing to listen in terms of some of their concerns," he said in the interview to be released Thursday.

Wow! Listening. What a novel idea. A damned good one, too, that'd require treating a quarter of the world's population with respect rather than dismiss them as lackeys or "evil-doers." Of course that never occurred to the Bushies, who could only talk about victory and not know anything of the actual concept -- victory as being defined by winning the hearts and minds of the Arab street. Absent that, we have what a McCain presidency would portend -- "More wars!"

And while a Republican-lite, corporate Clinton co-presidency, would be infinitely superior to anything the Neo-con can offer, it is still believed here that as only Nixon could go to China, so too can only Obama heal this wound.

powerful piece... must view...

the mythic little town of Brattleboro...

Ah, the lyrical, intimate little villa along the Connecticut River ensconced in the lower right corner of the Green Mountain State, abutted by New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Cozy!

Poets will now sing the praises of its people.

I too will bang the drum slowly.

Of course there will be peanuts thrown from the under imaginative gallery:
"Has everyone up there been out in the cold too long?" said one.

"I would like to know how I could get some water from your town," said another. "It's obvious that there is something special in it."
So it's official: Brattleboro will vote March 4th on whether to arrest George Bush and Dick Cheney should they dare show their faces in the land of Cherry Garcia:
"Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the law of the Town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro Police, pursuant to the above-mentioned indictments, arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them?"
All in favor say "Aiyeeee!"

thank you, gahd... !

Santana to the Mets means a stronger Sox line-up with Jacoby Ellsbury at the top, followed either by Dustin Pedroia or Kevin Youkilis, likely the former, while Youk follows Manny or Mike Lowell -- like, ooooo!

Keeping Lester is a good thing. Heavy duty baseball people have been saying he's quite possibly the #2 starter in waiting for the Sox. Julian Tavares even went so far as to call him the next Sandy Koufax. But then Tavares is the guy who roles his throws to 1st base. Weirdling!

So, le'me see. '08 Line-up:

1) Jacoby Ellsbury - CF
2) Dustin Pedroia - 2B
3) David Ortiz - DH
4) Manny Ramirez - LF
5) Mike Lowell - 3B
6) J.D. Drew - RF
7) Kevin Youkilis - 1B
8) Jason Varitek - C
9) Julio Lugo - SS

Rotation:
1) Josh Beckett
2) Curt Schilling
3) Daisuke Matsusaka
4) Clay Buchholz
5) Jon Lester
6) Tim Wakefield

I can live with that.

Bush Says Reliance on Faith Helped Him Beat 'Addiction' to Alcohol

Like, yawwwwwwn! I realize applause is the usual and socially appropriate response to when any sorry bastard beats an addiction; but when it's substituted with another addiction, say, the "Opiate Of The People," it's scarcely better on a personal level, let alone when it's become an obsessive compulsive disorder that gets several hundred thousand people killed.

Would that this prick had stayed crawled up in his bottle and left the rest of us to our luxury of growing weary of the last 8 years of Al Gore.

P.S., And why is this news?? We knew back when he was still governor that this fool was, and still is, a dry drunk, which is a whole different animal than a reformed alcoholic.

3 outta 5 ain't bad...

The students are back. Most of 'em anyways. Thought I'd crash a campus center or two, bring along my laptop and see where I could find a hotspot, and maybe get online.

After signing up with a temp agency in Noho, I walked up the hill along Route 9 to Smith College. (By the way, I didn't open up my laptop the other day at Smith as implied in a few posts down -- was just setting up an amusing scenario -- hokay, J? It coulda been funny, but Nooooo!)

So I'm at Smith a little after 1. A gray day, cold, wintery, sorta like how the Buckinghams sang it: Kind Of A Drag. And when the food caf wouldn't take my debit card, I was just a little more bummed. And when I couldn't get online, I said I'm outta there.

Stopped off at the house and ate my salad, which I paid good cash for after all that. Finished and then got back into the car to head over to UMass. Parked it in the garage. And it was still gray and drab, and most of my favorite haunts, i.e., the Coffee Shop, the Hatch, the Study Lounge opposite the Blue Wall were either dismantled, non-existent, or closed. Ok, the Blue Wall was open, but it was overlit and the tables were slow getting themselves cleaned.

Goddamn! This place has changed. So I left.

Drove to South Hadley. Mt. Holyoke College and to Blanchards, its Campus Center. Now this place is cozy. Got online too. Married a girl from here once. Might do it again. I mean they're cuter than the Smithies.

Oop! Back to work!

que the pastoral symphony...

The Bushian forces of evil are beaten back... for the moment:
The vote on the GOP cloture motion -- to ignore all the amendments and proceed to a final vote on the Bush-Rockefeller SIC bill -- has just occurred. The motion has failed, which means (shockingly) that Democrats have successfully mounted a filibuster preventing the vote on this horrible bill from occurring.
Translated to mean the Democrats seem to have evolved into vertebrates, although they're still an endangered species, and their capacity for DEvolving remains viable.

Tidy summary of what just happened to my faithful readers (all 3 of you): Today's anti-cloture vote means the FISA law, as unconstitutional as it is, has not yet been amended permanently with something even more odious called "The Patriot Act," embodied by the corporate/executive (read: fascist) wiretapping of your phones and monitoring of your emails -- of anybody at anytime -- and without warrant. Make no mistake: they're doing that now, but they're still liable for prosecution.

However, the worst of this excretia is Dubya's demand for immunity from civil action for the telecoms, i.e., AT&T and Verizon, for their wholesale participation in violating the American public's right to privacy. The telecoms must be held liable (to bankruptcy is the hope here) in order to hold Bush & Cheney liable (to maximum security incarceration is the dream here). If they get immunity, then the cover-up will succeed.

Of course, nothing is settled by today's events, and this act of what amounts to be heroism could easily be reversed with the help of 3 or 4 snivelling Senate Democrats not comfortable with doing the right thing. Stay tuned.

giving "states rights" a good name...

The good citizens of Brattleboro seem to be verging closer to voting on a warrant to arrest the President and Vice President.
[An activist] said he gathered nearly 500 signatures in about three weeks, and he said most people he encountered were eager to sign it. He started the petition drive about three months ago.

"Everybody I talked to wanted Bush to go," he said, noting that even members of the local police department supported the drive.
The scenario being if Dubya or Dick set foot in Vermont, they are to be arrested for the charges handed down, e.g., for espionage, obstruction of justice, war crimes, etc. And lest anybody say, "Yeah, well, they've never been to Vermont anyway... "
Activists in Louisville, Ky., are spearheading a similar drive, and he said activists were also working in Montague, Mass., a Berkshires town.
It'd be right tasty watching state cops draw down on the black limo with tinted windows. Of course the thing is bullet-proof, which means they'd have to do a Waco-like stake-out, starve the bastard out if necessary.

Slap the cuffs on 'im.

Make 'im do the perp walk.

Put it on YouTube.

and they called him "jack the dripper"...

Doing a little copyright editing at the home-slash-office, the subject being Jackson Pollock. Came across this little tidbit: The image you see at right is of Pollock's painting, entitled "No. 5, 1948." It sold in November 2006 for more money than has any painting prior to which in history: $140M. Uhm, that'd be a hundred and forty million dollars, people.

I realize this cannot constitute "news" a year & a quarter later, but I only just found out about it.

Trivia question: Which side is up?

Bet you thought the question would be, "What is Art?"

"ipso this, you pissy little fcc"...

FCC Proposes $1.4 Million Fine for Woman's 'Nude Buttocks' on NYPD Blue

Wait! Didn't NYPD Blue bear Sipowicz' (Dennis Franz) bare butt in the shower (arguably unprecedentedly obscene), like, back in '93? And why is the FCC going after the affiliates? Maybe because ABC, i.e., Disney, is too big and powerful (and decidedly rightwing politically) to take on for Kevin J. Martin, the Christianist, i.e., sanctimonious and hypocritical, loyal Bushie bastard chairman?

Nahhh! Couldn't be that.
