Interesting article in the San Diego paper recently that makes me wonder about the coming religious war in this country.
Apparently, there is a cross erected on a mountaintop somewhere near San Diego. Been there for years. The land is public, and the atheists are suing to get it removed. All pretty straightforward, right? Your garden-variety establishment clause case. Yawn.
Now the really interesting part, at least for me, is this. The city, not wanting to deal with this issue, and desiring to get out of the establishing religion business, tried to give away (or sell really cheaply) the mountaintop. Tried three times to get rid of it, two of those times to private entities. Now one thinks that this would end the problem, right? After all, if the cross isn't on city land anymore, there is no sponsorship. Seems like a pretty pragmatic solution, if you ask moi.
But the atheists have repeatedly gone to court and BLOCKED THE LAND TRANSFERS!!! Then, they go right back to hammering on the city to remove the cross.
What does that suggest? They want the cross to come down. They don't just want the government out of the cross-displaying business, they want the cross to disappear.
The evangelical Christians are complaining about being marginalized for belief, and this story, among others, gives this thinking some credence. It isn't just nutjob paranoia when you see that the atheists are not just content to keep gov out of the religion business, but want to eliminate it by inverse condemnation. Admittedly, it is a trivial issue, but it has a darker portend, and I think the dogma will get pissed off enough to go after the karma.
well, if yer gonna digress, i might suggest that i too would object to yet another sale of public land -- a mountain top, did you say? -- to deep pocketed individdles if only to alleviate a tension created by a republican municipal gov't reaching into the citizenry's pockets to subsidize his religious genuflection... ??

I drove 84 that way once. Don't recall what you were speaking of as I was too busy avoiding uninsured illegals with CT plates and A-holes with NY plates.
