"heritage," my left glute...

So I'm parked at the corner, waiting for my next call on the radio. I'm watching as this pick-up blows past. Attached to the bed in the back is a huge flag-pole festooned with an oversized Confederate flag flapping furiously and flatulently.

"Dickheads," I thought, shaking my head.

Yeah, yeah! "Heritage," is their argument. Gotta keep the faith, dude. Yeh, I get it. I mean, half my lineage is North Carolina/Virginia-way anyhow. I enjoy the people, they talk funny, I have a good time when I'm there. So to the good ol' boys of the deep south: the flag offends, but I believe you mean it, those of you who indulge in flying the Starz'n Barz, when you say it's about your heritage. I'm nuanced, I can go there.

But these assholes are from Maine! How many Confederates were in Maine during those, uhm, Heritage days? If there was one, he was a spy. Know what I mean?

Homey don't play that, and neither do I.

Update: And don't get me started on the wind-drag a flag that big can increase in gas costs there, bud!

They coulda been transplants

(though I doubt it)

I have a running bet with a friend in Phila (raving lib attorney, kinda the opposite of me) that the new Administration will either make display of the stars and bars (1) illegal or (2) actionable in civil court.

The time frame is the midterm elections, so in the next two years, I predict that there will be some action taken by the admin., whether it is an exec order to the DoJ to punish flag displays as hate crimes, or allowing people to sue flagwavers if they are "offended" or "threatened" by the display.

And I have to admit that I have no dog in the fight (I was never a citizen of the CSA), yet I can't help but wonder about the commitment to the First Amendment of those who want the confederate flag banned.

. . . though I did live in Virginia for awhile, so I wonder. Hmmm?

Nope, the CSA conceded defeat, and the War of Northern Agression officially ended so, nope, not a southerner by dint of a former address.

Years ago, I saw the same thing in Maryland (eastern shore) and it surprised the hell out of me until I remembered that Maryland was below the Mason-Dixon line, and was considered occupied territory.

CCG2

BTW, whether stars and bars or the soon-to-be-former Old Glory, doing that is idiotic---it just kills your gas mileage.

there is, i think, a correlation between not giving a shit about minorities and not giving a shit about people in general, let alone about what they think of trogladytic living...

also, if the supreme court has ruled that burning old glory is anathema to the 1st amendment, i cannot see how banning the confederate flag is sustainable...

Here;s how it will go down. It won't be an outright ban, because it can't be. Clear 1st Amemdment violation. So, Holder and the Messiah push through new legislation that adds displaying the CSA flag to the list of "per se" factors that are hate crimes if someone says they feel threatened.

This opens the floodgates and every brother that sees a flag will then drop dime and say they feel "threatened." Morris Dees will teach seminars on how to do it. And by force of prosecution, flying it will be de facto illegal.

And I win my bet.

given habeus corpus has been shredded already, all the rest of your argument is moot...

and nobody wins that bet...
