please, oh please, can't someone impeach this fucker... ?

Kevin Drum makes a fine point to illustrate the Bushies aren't incompetent... but they are criminally depraved:
"However, this is the clearest evidence I've seen yet. The guy who was actually in charge of logistics has now directly confirmed that Rumsfeld not only didn't intend to rebuild Iraq in any serious way, but threatened to fire anyone who wasted time on the idea. Needless to say, he wouldn't have done this unless it reflected the wishes of the president.

"And this also means that all of Bush's talk about democracy was nothing but hot air. If you're serious about planting democracy after a war, you don't plan to simply topple a government and then leave.

"So: the lack of postwar planning wasn't merely the result of incompetence. It was deliberate policy. There was never any intention of rebuilding Iraq and there was never any intention of wasting time on democracy promotion. That was merely a post hoc explanation after we failed to find the promised WMD. Either that or [Brigadier General Mark] Scheid [chief of the Logistics War Plans Division after 9/11, and one of the people with primary responsibility for war planning] is lying."
And so, may I propose to all you SUV drivers, vehicles festooned with "Bush/Cheney '04" and "My SUV [Heart] Iraqi Oil" bumper stickers, and, of course, with "Support Our Troops" ribbons: please procede to the nearest precipice... and give 'er the gun.

Would you really prefer to think of your president (and his administration) as incompetent? Your citizens voted for him, and again. Are they fools? Do you really think they believed his excuses for the war in Iraq? Isn't it so that, if they once did truly believe the argument for toppling Saddam (however fleetingly), they no longer do -- yet, that changes nothing in American policy, or on the ground in Iraq? Your fellow citizens are simply grateful that the cost of petrol seems to be somewhat stable at less than three dollars per gallon in the US now; and they are willing to use (or let their government use) whatever muscle necessary to maintain that "stability" -- such as it is.

As for impeachment, with whom will you replace Mr. Bush? Americans don't want a president with a so-called nuanced outlook, a sophisticated and worldly person of substance who grasps the fine points of issue in a complex world. They prefer plain speech and don't mind, too much, the simple thinking of those who speak it. Mr. Bush's poll numbers are down only because Americans are embarassed they haven't been able to say "mission accomplished" in Baghdad. But they will get over it, so long as fuel remains plentiful and affordable, no genuine threat to security in the continental US manifests itself, and not too many bodies come home. God bless America.

well thank you for your less than three-dimensional synopsis, my good man/madame... and, yes, those who voted for bush are fools...

regulars of this particular blog will know i believe the american public's will has been thwarted the last three election cycles so i cannot categorically summarize americans thusly; just the myopians who couldn't see thru the creature's thin veneer of credibility, or couldn't care... but i guess that's what makes them good christians...

but please do come again...

Sightseer, I don't think you speak for the masses. He's a failure, as his father was and as his whorish children and homicidal wife are. He is, in a word, an embarassment and while there are many factors involved as to why people voted for him, his ratings prove that the majority of those that voted for him now wish they could shoot themselves in the foot about their decision.

Americans do not prefer plain speak, they just aren't impressed with those who choose to say in a paragraph what can be said in a sentence. Personally, it's hard to bullshit your way in a three word sentence, such as you get when you listen to politicians speak in Parliament, for instance. It's no wonder the Brits hate their own government as well.

Bush's poll numbers are down because the veil he created with his lies has been lifted. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't confuse yourself by comparing the American public with the leaders that win elections. Given our electoral system they often are not representative of each other. Any high school textbook will tell you that.

Of course, as G mentions, the last few elections haven't exactly been played on a level playing field have they? And despite your comments, his poll numbers are still pathetic for a president that managed to not onlhy lose all of the "capital" he earned with his election, but now finds himself bankrupt, financially, morally and politically. So yes, God bless america damn it... eventually, all villans pay. Bush will be no different, one way or the other.

I don't mind that G finds my comments to be be less than fully dimensional. They are hardly worthy of the term "analysis" as he so generously describes them.

And, Spared, I do not presume to speak for the masses of any country. I merely make modest observations for myself, and occasionally speak of them -- however limited my vision or ability to articulate may be.

As for hating one's government, why is that such a bad thing, here or there? Isn't your constitution famously built upon the distrust of government: England's, if I am not mistaken? Perhaps, instead of feeling anger, you should feel gratitude for an administration that so thoroughly reminds you of that premise.

By the way, I do not agree that all villains pay. However, I am encouraged to learn that the American people are nothing like their leaders.

Further, I meant it when I said, God bless America. Did you?

sightseer - if we thought England was that great, we'd still be under the Brits' rule. No need for history lessons here. But thanks.

G - I'm sparing at least one for now. I just realized what a waste of time trying to communicate can be sometimes.

Goodnight.
