sauce for the goose and the gander...

arianna has a paragraph that got me thinking:
Friedman's assertion about the pervasiveness of modern weaponry is born out by the Israeli general who told the New York Times that Hezbollah has "some of the best weapons systems that Iran and Syria have" -- including medium-range rockets, laser-guided antitank missiles, and well-designed explosive mines that can cripple an advance tank. The group has more than 10,000 rockets, including Iranian-made long range missiles capable of hitting Tel Aviv.
of course, that we're the world's biggest dealer in arms and advanced weaponry, our getting hoisted by our own petard as russia & china return the favor of the cold war is, on an imperical if not patriotic level, poetic justice... we armed osama to the teeth with SAM technology in the early 80s to neutralize the soviet air-superiority in and around kabul, allowing the mujahadeen to bleed the red army, just as the iraqi insurgency is bleeding g.i. joe in baghdad and the hezbollah will bleed the israelis in lebanon... and now moscow & beijing are fast-forwarding the means for all of islam to resist the great satan and its zionist proxy... tit for tat...

or did you actually think the soviet incursion into afghanistan in 1980 was unjust while our invasion of iraq, or the israeli collateral infliction on lebanese civilians, as just... ? see, that's why i'm agnostic: that kind of nationalist "logic" escapes me...

meanwhile, did you notice the soviets were at least smart enough to get the hell out... ?

sheep's clothing...

[REPUBLISHED FROM MY DEFUNCT BLOG "THE MAINEIAC" (12/14/04) never more timely than from now until August 8th, i'd say... ]

David Corn speculates on the scurvy Joe Lieberman as the next bet for DHS Sec'y. I say scurvy for two reasons: one political, the other personal.

Politically he's Vichy, a collaborator with the Bush Nazis. It's why he was early toast in the democratic presidential primaries (in an era when loathing that which is Bush was, and still is, a healthy and human purging of the phlegm brought on by Red State Spongeform Ensephylopathy), that and his smarmy, hypocritical, holier-than-thou personna given voice with an insufferably adenoidal flint, facilitating little more than the tightening of his listener's colon.

Personally, Lieberman got up my wazoo just after Operation Desert Storm reached its conclusion. Lieberman and Sam Nunn, a better example of conservative Dem who could do it without sacrificing his integrity, went to Kuwait for clean-up oversight. It was 1991 and I was a weekend news anchor at WELI Radio in New Haven (made famous during John Kusack's victory speech in *True Colors* - interesting movie).

Lieberman's press secretary organized a phone conference among six stations across Connecticut from Bridgeport to Hartford. I had the first question.

"Senator, this police action has resulted in the deaths of dozens of coalition forces, the deaths of thousands, if not tens of thousands of Iraqis. Meanwhile Saadam is still on his throne in Baghdad even as we've [returned] the Emir of Kuwait, the deflowerer of virgins, back on his; you and your colleagues are now over there patting yourselves on the back; so maybe you can tell our listeners why it is we went to war in the Persian Gulf in the first place." The interview was pre-recorded and the question, as was, would never go on the air. I was in no mood to receive flack from a Lieberman apologist calling in.

But it may help add context to my attitude by recalling the beloved Donald Rumsfeld, working at the time for Ronald Reagan, being photographed carrying a shit-eating grin and a handshake to Saadam, while only a few years later, George Bush the 1st's ambassador enabled Saadam with the assurance the United States had no position on his imminent invasion of Kuwait -- that is, until Maggie "Attila the Hen" Thatcher scolded Poppy after the fact, "Now don't go wobbly on us, George!"

This was, of course, a few years before Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney (before he dicks you!) pushed for overriding sanctions against Saadam, that is before vice president Dick Cheney (again, before he dicks you!) pushed to override the override.

I don't recall Lieberman's mealy-mouthed response to my question, or maybe it was hearing that fingernail & chalkboard gargle in my headphones that caused my eyes to glaze and my brain to seize.

The next day, after my apparent blackout, I was called into my news director's office. The Senator's press secretary had called and was livid. "Who's that 'Geraldo Rivera' you had working yesterday?!"

"Jesus Christ!" I protested. "I didn't ask him about his sex life."

The news director laughed and sent me back to work.

But I had had it with Mr. Mashed Potatoface ever since.

another day...

alright, enough of the nonsense... i'm at a loss for anything relevant to say about the madness that has descended upon the world... america is no longer what it was publically related to be for the last hundred some-odd years -- you know, "land of the free, home of the brave," that shit; setting the world on fire and itching for more isn't brave, and the bushians never gave a good goddamn about freeing the sand niggers... all rather quite the opposite...

aw, what the hell... ? whaddu I know, i'm just a solitary entitity with an attitude who can type 75 words a minute...

i know comparing bush to hitler isn't acceptable in polite company, but i can't help but think on the parallels: the invading of other countries, the wholesale degradation, torture, and slaughter of other races with all the usual and very suspect rationales; also, the runty personnae comprising the corresponding chiefs of state, forever compelling both to overcompensate with hairy oratory and a contemptuous disrespect for the never-ending supply of people who aim nothing other than to please...

come to think of it, i disrespect them too...

but it's easier to despair our lot while middle-aged, figuring i won't live long enough to see the shit spiral a whole lot further... witnessing this hand-basket's ride to hades as a youngster, however, would have to be a greater disconcertion i can only now imagine... i fear i'm at a point of not caring whether the human race survives another century as a species... we don't deserve to... and everybody i care about won't be around in a hundred years...

on the other hand...

if we, say, clean ourselves up, and the space around us... if we rid ourselves of religion (at the risk of sounding like john lennon), because let's see it, religion, for what it is: a means of control, of the many by the few... the many are complicit as they are peopled by the simple, the needy, and the desperate, all grasping a thin reed called "god"... and in the end, this "control" somehow ceases to be... the shit gets out of hand, and we get, what, world war x... ?

fuck that... and fuck them... !!

as for the few calling the shots... ? they're evil... they are the true misanthropes... they don't believe a hint of the pablum they dispense, but they shovel it like drug dealers to the many, who are only too eager to lap it up... and why not, it's so fucking profitable... and there you have it, the many clutch their almighty; and the few clutch their almighty dollar...

not me, babe... i weary of everbody's deity..

i'd rather sip some bourbon... spank a pretty's bum... and bark up some trees...

too early for the islamists to wage this fight...

an easy bluff to call - today:

"Iran warns of 'fierce response' should Israel strike at Syria

"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday an Israeli strike on Syria would be considered an attack on the whole Islamic world that would bring a "fierce response", state television reported."

http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/738315.html

in this case: the enemy of my enemy is not my friend...

go figure...

spent on the earliest friday...

the vote was 390 to 33, lopsided by even congressional standards... and so we won't fuck with the civil rights act this day... i'm so proud of this house of representatives, i could just shit...

flag draped coffins - let me get this straight: if republicans use the image, that's okay... (and by the way, the etymology of "OK" = zero (0) killed, OK!!) but the dems are sleazy manipulators when they use the image or dare invoke the numbers 9/11... ?

the middle east, or at least beirut and baghdad, is on fire again... let me know when it spreads to syria and iran, that'll be the line, crossed, that's been drawn since '67... and why, by the by, is saudi arabia spared a conflagration.... ? i mean i WANNA see humvee & SUV drivers paying $10 a gallon for gas... fuckers... !! (jesus christ! and just as i type that, a commercial on olbermann's program for the humvee -- fuck them... fuck them all... !!)

what... !? red buttons was still alive until today... ?? wasn't he on the original *poseiden adventure*... ?? i thought everybody died since then...

i am NOT that old... !!

and begging the sidebar question: how scary hideous must karen black, goggle-eyes and all, be today -- eh, julie newmar... ?

okay, that was uncalled for... i blame the syrah...

having a cognitive disconnect...

okay, fresh off of watching eugene jarecki's "why we fight" documentary on dvd, a brilliant -- yes! -- summary of what eisenhower dubbed the military industrial complex, and what it has morphed into, i.e, a modern orwellian oligarchical cheney/bush/halliburton/carlysle corruptocracy...

i'm left to conclude that after the republicans steal the elections of '06 (and the american sheep passively accept it yet again), we will proceed to bomb iran -- and i sadly admit to that as having taken only 28 years after i wanted them to...

but what did i know in 1979... ? i was a snot-nosed 19 year-old full of hormones and viscera -- not a bad sensation, that, especially with teenage girls wandering about... but as an imprimatur for gunboat diplomacy in these times: i think i'd rather not...

now is hindsight, you see, and i'm left with an odd sense of irony: the same culture that wants a gun in every classroom -- complete with a pocket bible and fireproof heterosexual flag (the logic being there'd be fewer shootings in pulpits and brothels, and, uhm, i'd like to spare the brothels) -- also want to prohibit tehran and pyongyang the right to arm bears, them being fucking sub-human heathens and all (persians, koreans & bears -- oh my!)...

personally, i'm all in favor of their possessing nukes... because i'm thoroughly convinced they'd never be foolish enough to use them on us, unless, of course, we used our daisy-cutters on them... or more simply, if they were to possess the requisite armament, WE would be prohibited to make war against them...

hey now, *there's* a concept...

i'll buy that for a dollar...

cenk uygar (yup!), by way of favored link "eat the press," pretty much summarizes it as succinctly as it can be:

"We are not against Joe Lieberman because we are leftists who require ideological purity. We are against him because he aids and abets an out of control Republican Party."

The deal of course is maintaining a consistent mantra when dispensing talking points -- just ask the repos -- and this works for me, and ought to for each and all left-of-center talking heads answering to the more dimly-witted of the political press corps...

UPDATE:

whoa! uygar's summation of all that is wrong with joe lieberman is brilliant... ! and i'll link to it as soon as i figure out how via my mac... in the meantime, do read it!!

cup *this*....

just read online the guineas beat the frogs (oh sorry, un-PC? tsk!)...

living in boston in the middle 80s, i seem to recall the italians winning the world cup then, if for no other reason then the habitants of beantown's north end came spilling out into the streets, down tremont past city hall and toward the common, all the while waving the italian flag, honking their horns, yelling their asses off and, well, just plain looking like a celtics parade in reverse (where it starts in back bay and ends up at city hall)... moreover, the city prepares a day or two in advance for when one of the boston teams wins all the marbles...

i suspect now the north-enders are once again going bonkers, but with the rest of the city just sorta lookin' on, as i write this...

(and just as i note papelbon blows the save w/2 out in the bottom of the 9th on a dye homer - aww fuck!!)

no thanks...

one of the links on the right has an ad for "bush toilet paper," essentially a roll of t.p. with the smiling mug of one george w. bush on each and every sheet...

i must object...

this is offensive...

not, of course, because anybody might rightfully equate and thus marry-up this war criminal's weasally, inbred puss with cleansing their backside of remnant feces... but the mere site of that >gah!< face MAKES ME CLAMP... !

kinda defeats the purpose for making the scene, eh... ?

just a thought...

stream of conciousness stuff, i grant u...

pondering those types you see at the mall, in the food court areas - you know, the ones fussin' on their laptops w/the wireless connectivity... ? well it dawned on me: my new macbook pro is too goddamned expensive for me to be sitting there, browsing the net, getting up to go get a hummas wrap or some-such, walk back and find somebody's swiped the damned thing... i mean, setting aside the sense of having been invaded, i'm just supposin' on the clinical and legal level that'd be "grand theft," i.e., given the cost of it...

"grand theft" i thought again... like "grand theft... auto," although my laptop's not an auto, but nevermind... then i thought about the video game "grand theft auto" and all the sick fucks who love to cyber-blow images that represent people, small animals and cops apart, by way of crankin' their joy-sticks and pushing the arrow keys, etc., all the while doing their best not to let the foam at the mouths dribble down their chins...

and then it hit me: they should call the thing "grand theft auto-erotica"... which, by the way, i plan on using as the title of a short-story i'll write somewhen, so don't think of plagerizing it, ann coulter, you hag, okay... ?

ah, the things u muse on while takin' a leak...

Here's Your Legacy, George Fucking Bush!

Hate Groups Are Infiltrating the Military, Group Asserts:
A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" to infiltrate the military, according to a watchdog organization.
-snip-
"Light infantry is your branch of choice because the coming race war and the ethnic cleansing to follow will be very much an infantryman's war," he wrote. "It will be house-to-house, neighborhood-by-neighborhood until your town or city is cleared and the alien races are driven into the countryside where they can be hunted down and 'cleansed.' "

He concluded: "As a professional soldier, my goal is to fill the ranks of the United States Army with skinheads. As street brawlers, you will be useless in the coming race war. As trained infantrymen, you will join the ranks of the Aryan warrior brotherhood."
The Uniter-Not-A-Divider strikes again.

Jesus As Art Critic

Mat 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Les*bos

a Greek island in the eastern Agean Sea, off the coast of northwestern Turkey. Its artistic golden age of the late 7th and early 6th centuries BC produced the poets Alcaeus and Sappho. Greek name Lesvos.

Sap*pho

(early 7th century BC) Greek lyric poet who lived on Lesbos. Many of her poems express her affection of love for women and have given rise to her association with female homosexuality.

SquaDouche!!

An appropriate follow-up to the previous post (via DailyKos):
[In the Hamdan decision,] Justice Thomas refers to Justice Stevens' "unfamiliarity with the realities of warfare"; but Stevens served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. Thomas's official bio, by contrast, contains no experience of military service.

A Rubber SCOTUS Not

Okay - Whoa!

The Supreme Court says Bush CAN'T!! do what he wants when he wants:
1. That the President's conduct is subject to the limitations of statute and treaty (see, e.g., footnote 23, and the Kennedy and Breyer excerpts that Orin Kerr quotes).

2. That Congress's enactments are best construed to require compliance with the international laws of armed conflict, absent contrary legislative direction.

3. That Common Article 3 of Geneva aplies as a matter of treaty obligation to the conflict against Al Qaeda. (See also the AMK concurrence: "The provision is part of a treaty the United States has ratified and thus accepted as binding law. By Act of Congress, moreover, violations of Common Article 3 are considered 'war crimes,' punishable as federal offenses, when committed by or against United States nationals and military personnel.
Listening to Al Franken this afternoon: word had it Clarence Thomas, as vinegary a douche bag you wouldn't find in an abandoned whorehouse, and who never -- Never! -- utters a peep from the bench, read aloud his virulent dissent.

"War crimes" ehh... ?

And The Flag Said: "I'm More Popular Than Jesus Christ!"

The Fix Is In - Part (Whatever)

Analysts see far-reaching consequences to Supreme Court gerrymandering ruling:
The ruling allows states to redistrict along party lines to benefit the party in power. The courts ruling also allows states to redistrict at anytime instead of every ten years.
Then these pricks turn around and say we -- those of us who might justifiably be disturbed by what's going on -- "hate America." So let me put it this way: I despise these people and everything they stand for, and particularly for what they're doing to my country.

And if they succeed in codifying this vision for our nation -- the one-party state, the government-controlled media, the undercurrent of fear of fear itself -- and call it America, then they'll be right... for once.

Just Posted A Comment On Digby's Page

i've thought about faith and religion and spirituality for a long time now... this is what i know:

an individual extends him or herself, and at a certain peril perhaps, in order to believe in something... and it is then when this person makes him or herself vulnerable, not unlike a person taking a chance by falling in love... and god bless 'em for the effort, because without taking chances we shall certainly die (out of boredom if nothing else)...

i used to reactively dismiss any person's "religion" or "faith" as a crutch or an addiction... but y'know? -- a body needs to believe in something, i.e., beyond that which they can perceive with their corporeal senses... so i offer the courtesy of respect for that need, and applaud the individual for making the effort...

however, it is the content of those beliefs, be it in astrology, scientology, christianity, judaism or islam, whathaveyou, when my suspicion is it's all complete and utter bullshit...

i saw it on a bumper sticker (sadly offered, but there it is):
"militant agnostic: i don't know and neither do you"...

A Clue If U Will

I periodically go into the Apple Store at the Mall. Each time I use my phone, my "T-Mobile" signal switches over to "Cingular." Cingular, of course, is a Verizon subsidiary, and Verizon, of course, is in bed w/the NSA to drop as many dimes on its customers as it can.

Am I being paranoid yet again?

Nevermind, Naahm, Heavynews, and the rest of you police state apologists, it was rhetorical.

If You Live In Delaware - CALL BIDEN NOW!!

Joe Biden thinks he stands half a chance on getting the '08 nomination? Is he ill??
According to observers on both sides of the debate, the only Democratic Senator to express serious concern in public about the [Net Neutraility] measure is Senator Biden of Delaware, another possible presidential candidate in 2008. At a hearing last week, Mr. Biden said he saw no pressing need for the legislation and suggested that a public outcry would force Congress to act if Internet companies started cutting off access to unpopular sites.
Biden's the same dick-bag who sold consumers out on the credit card/bankruptcy bill last fall. He's one of the last Dems to have pause on Net Neutrality. Hell! Even Joementum supports Net Neutrality. Call Joe Biden's office now!

Fuck AT&T!!

Fuck them in the ass!!
AT&T has issued an updated privacy policy that takes effect Friday. The changes are significant because they appear to give the telecom giant more latitude when it comes to sharing customers' personal data with government officials.

The new policy says that AT&T -- not customers -- owns customers' confidential info and can use it "to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process."

Clueless Lieberman

Am betting to this day the junior Senator from Connecticut thinks it's solely because he supports open-ended occupation of Iraq as why the blogosphere is after his ass in the CT primary.

Here's the real reason:

However one reacts to this ruling, the issue here is that while Justice Scalia likes to puff himself an "originalist," the reality is that this decision not only reverses the Bill of Rights, prohibiting unreasonable searches, but also English common law and the doctrine of "knock and announce," which for eight centuries has mandated that police must identify themselves and wait a reasonable time before entering someone's home. . .

It's worth noting that this vote occurred because, though the case had previously been argued in January, it was re-argued after Sandra Day O'Connor left the Court. Replaced by Samuel Alito, the resulting vote was altered.
Lieberfuck, along with other "centrists" (read unprincipled sell-outs), voted for cloture on the Alito confirmation, then turned around and voted against Alito the next day knowing full well the cloture vote was the one that mattered and would confirm Alito's facist presence for the next 40 years.

Verbal Envy

Today it's for Marty Kaplan's current piece in HuffPo:
Since 9/11, there has been a horror that many Americans have been unable to confront. It is not the horror of terrorism, or the ugliness of despotism, or the ambitions of our adversaries. It is the fear that -- at this terrible crossroads in human history -- the Constitution no longer protects us from the ad hoc fascism of monomaniacal ideologues, and that the President who fronts for them is no less clueless today than when he was plucked from mediocrity at the end of the last century to be their Manchurian candidate. Perhaps now, finally, we are becoming more willing to lower our hands from our eyes and see the awful truth.

Virginia Is For Lovers

Interesting piece, of which ol' buddy Naahm avec Plumage ought make note (given that Virgina's newly nominated Dem candidate for Senate was once Ronald Reagan's Navy Sec'y - >wacca<):

The breakdown of the VA-Sen vote is highly interesting.

People don't realize that Miller dominated the paid media. Absolutely dominated. Webb benefited from strong earned media, but that was more than balanced by Miller's strength in paid media.

In the City of Alexandria, Miller was endorsed by the Mayor and the entire City Council and a number of local legislators.

Alexandria went for Webb 2:1.

Guys, what in the hell happened here?

The only two plausible explanations are (1) the extreme level of online activism for Webb, or (2) a major backlash against Miller for his negative ads. NoVa is one of the most wired and most politically-knowledgeable communities in America. In a low turnout election its conceivable that NoVa voters, who are more likely to get political information through the web, ended up turning out and going for Webb big. It also makes sense that like in most low-turnout primaries, older voters (55+) tend to show-up most heavily and they, already angry at politics as usual, revolted against a negative, politics-as-usual campaign from Miller.

I didn't vote this time around. Dem primary, and I'd've supported either Jim Webb or Harrison Miller vs. confederate chucklehead George Allen. My bet was on Webb to win big as I have a good sense of the pulse 'round these parts. But I'm getting very annoyed that Fairfax county insists on the freakin' touch-screens for voting. On the other hand, Virginia has a Dem governor so, unlike in Florida, Ohio & California, the touch-screens won't, in and of themselves, tip the vote to the Republican.

Assuming the fight is fair then, here's my prediction: Webb in a walk over Allen.

Friday Afternoon Follies

Skank Update: Ohhh!! She's now suggesting Rep. Murtha should be fragged. And might you suppose, when one of her travelling dingleberries takes her up on it, NBC, that publically stalwart rectum of a network, will still give her air-time?
  • Money is to Liberals as Sex is to Conservatives, i.e., it's all so very dirty; didn't read it yet, just sorta grocked the headline...
  • And lest we forget the world's climate, that is, other than with respect to Global Warming, the U.S. World Cup team has to stay on a U.S. air base in Germany rather than be allowed to consort with their foreign contemporaries. Reason being, of course: They fucking hate us!! The bitch of it is for those who do travel abroad, as they are least likely to have voted for the Cocksucker in Chief!!

God Bless Real Democracy!

Holy Joe supports Net Neutrality, and as Mel Allen liked to say: "How Uhh'Bout Dat!!?"

Think maybe it's because the Netroots endeavor to kick Joementum to a Connecticut curb that he's starting to behave -- >gasp< -- like a Democrat?

In other news:

Chuck Schumer won't rule out backing Joe Blow over the prospective Democratic nominee Ned Lamont, should Joe Schmoe decide to switch to being an Independant candidate?

Reactions:
DailyKos says Schumer & the DCCC are courting intra-party war...
Crooks & Liars says could be interesting how this plays out...
Talking Points Memo is >yawwwwn< "[N]ot taking any sides" (Jim Hightower: "The only thing in the middle of the road are yellow stripes and dead armidillers.")...
Firedoglake (the best site at bashing ol' Lieberlips) says Schumer is running an incumbent-protection racket...
MyDD tags the "machine" Dems in Connecticut...

For starters...

It says here not to worry. Even Dem Senators don't like JoeJoe any more than we do. But assumedly Schumer & Harry Reid made a deal to keep mum until A) Boltin' Joe leaves the party prior to the primary; or B) Ned Lamont is in fact nominated for the seat. At which point, either, the Dems will heartily flock to Lamont's side. Gotta be!

The Democratic leadership in Congress may be pathetic & weak little farts, but they aren't stupid. Well... they're that too, but not that stupid. They've seen the returns from YearlyKos.

The Fix, Being In, Finally Reaches The Mainstream

Bob Herbert in the Times:
No one has been able to prove that the election in Ohio was hijacked. But whenever it is closely scrutinized, the range of problems and dirty tricks that come to light is shocking. What's not shocking, of course, is that every glitch and every foul-up in Ohio, every arbitrary new rule and regulation, somehow favored Bush.
And this is, what, a year & a half later?

And That'd Be A *Super*-Closet?

To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld: "I've been outted and I didn't know I was in.":
So he wears a leotard and flies around in a red cape. Big deal, Singer said, noting Spider-Man wears tights. The X-Men do too, and they aren't gay. Singer ought to know, he directed 2000's "X-Men" movie and 2003's "X2: X-Men United."
Jesus! I grew up on this shit! I mean, could it be?

Today's Definition

"Desecration of the American flag":
- when a Republican wraps himself in it...

Where're My Meds?

I must be having a psychotic episode:
Monopolies in many cable TV markets could end under House-passed legislation that supporters said would increase competition and drive down prices.
I'm confident the Repos'll put the kaibash on any consumer-friendly legislation when the time comes. But imagine it for a moment: Lower cable rates... ! Whew!!

A guy simply can't keep a good bark goin' if Congress does the right thing. I mean, Jesus!!

Like Cats, They Rub Up To Those Who Disdain Them

Had to kick the "Where Christians Meet" ad to the curb. Two reasons:

1) I don't know what "Christians" are.

2) I don't want them procreating.

"The Logical Song" by Supertramp

When i was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they´d be singing so happily
Oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me

But then they sent me away
To teach me how to be sensible
Logical, oh responsible, practical
And they showed me a world
Where i could be so dependable
Oh clinical, oh intellectual, cynical

There are times when all the world´s asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won´t you please, please tell me what we´ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who i am

Now watch what you say
Or they´ll be calling you a radical
A liberal, oh fanatical, criminal
Oh won´t you sign up your name
We´d like to feel you´re
Acceptable, respectable,
oh presentable, a vegetable!

At night when all the world´s asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won´t you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who i am,

who i am,

who i am,

who i am...

The Fix Is In - Part Deux

As in, We The People are so fucked!
"The future Sergey Brins, the future Marc Andreessens, of Netscape and Google...are going to have to pay taxes" to broadband providers, said Rep. Ed Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat behind the Net neutrality amendment. This vote will change "the Internet for the rest of eternity," he warned.

At issue is a lengthy measure called the Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement (COPE) Act, which a House committee approved in April. Its Republican backers, along with broadband providers such as Verizon and AT&T...
AT&T and Verizon, of course, are 2 of those 3 Axis of Evil:Corporate cock-suckers (the 3rd being BellSouth; and I'm willing to bet on there being a slew more), who are known to be selling out We The People to the National Security Administration. I can say this now, as you, for the moment, are allowed to read it, precisely because the Republicans and Vichy-Democrats haven't yet cinched the gunny-sack that is this heinous bit of oligarchical business.

I realize I'm setting myself up for wearing the tin-foil beanie -- complete with propeller, thank you -- but wait'l mid-November and we'll find the Republicans in position to control both houses of Congress for another deuce, this despite the myriad exit polls indicating 180 degrees worth of the American people's will, or when one of the Rupert Scaifes or G.E. buys out the NYTimes and turns it into another Washington Times (which, again, wouldn't be a huge makeover), or, less dramatically, when media consolidation continues down its narrower and narrower path, or... or... or...

On the other hand, media speculation as to why there haven't been more frequent populist protests in the cities of America, akin to the 60s in relation to Vietnam, could be directly attributable to our having access to a relatively free Internet: a safety valve, if you will, a place to vent. So when the Corporate Repos impose more and more of their arbitrary restrictions on our access to a dissenting media, the burbling disaffection online may very well spill back into the streets, along with its corresponding, more calamitous manifestations.

Hell! It'd be a sadder state of affairs if it didn't. Thomas Jefferson, call your office.

The American government today is clearly not "of the people, by the people, for the people"; and thus are the consequences of staying this course: it "shall . . . perish from the earth."

The Fix Is In

The prediction here is the Republicans will maintain control of Congress after this November's elections -- not because the American people don't want to run the bastards out but because they cannot:
The biggest concern about the race, by far, is that San Diego County uses two types of Diebold voting systems -- optical-scan and touch-screen -- both of which have not only proven to be disastrously unreliable in San Diego County and California in the past, but have also been demonstrated over the last six months to feature dozens of exceedingly well-documented and remarkable security vulnerabilities, making them extremely accessible to tampering. Especially if anyone has unsupervised physical access for more than a minute or two with them.

The voting machines used in Tuesday's election were sent home with volunteer poll workers the night before the election, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office today. As well, The BRAD BLOG has received reports that in some cases, poll workers may have had the machines alone at their houses, unsupervised, for a week or even two prior to Tuesday's election...
What, you didn't read about this in the New York Times? Read the previous post.

The State of American Journalism Today

The suspicion's been brewing for at least a decade (i.e., since Monica & Bill), but the realization now is that the elite of the American free press is in the tank for big business and the GOP, and is doing its level best to undermine what is left of our democracy.

But even so, if you can't trust the Associated Press...
There was nothing about this sorry episode that deserved praise or reward, even in an informal newsroom way. It's hard to see the AP in the same light again. But it does renew my sense of why we [bloggers] do what we do and reminds me of the essential corruption of much of the national political press. Washington's a funny place.
Except I ain't laughing; and "funny," as in "strange" just doesn't begin to cover the repugnance of it all.

Spreading The Word

Philip Slater in HuffPo:

The reason why so many fundamentalist Christians are so notoriously "unChristian" is simple: for the majority of Christians (Quakers are among many notable exceptions) Christianity isn't about the teachings of Jesus, and never was. The early church fathers knew that Jesus' rather Buddhist message of nonviolence and voluntary poverty wouldn't fly in the Graeco-Roman world, let alone in the Middle East. The idea of a Redeemer on the other hand--someone who would voluntarily sacrifice Himself for humanity and their sins--was very popular. Instead of having to give up their worldly goods and espouse non-violence, all the Romans had to do was believe in the miraculous stories surrounding Jesus' birth and death, which was easy for them, since such stories had been told about pagan gods and heroes and were already familiar.

Christianity as it exists among fundamentalists isn't about behaving like Jesus. It's all about faith--about believing the story. The underlying message seems to be: you can behave any way you want as long as you believe the story and say you're sorry before you die. Following the teachings of Jesus is much too demanding, whereas with the Christianity of fundamentalists all you have to do is shut your mind off.

There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word "Christian" has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry.

I'd offer "Bingo!", but it's already in use; e.g., in seconding Slater's argument.

What Is It -- The Altitude?

Fucking Colorado:
O'Dowd and company bend over backward in the article to say they are "tolerant" of other views on the club, but that's contradicted by statements like this from CEO Monfort: "I don't want to offend anyone, but I think character-wise we're stronger than anyone in baseball. Christians, and what they've endured, are some of the strongest people in baseball. I believe God sends signs, and we're seeing those." Assumedly, Shawn Green (Jew), Ichiro Suzuki (Shinto) or any of the godless players from Cuba don't have the "character" Monfort is looking for.
First it was the Air Force Academy shoving right-wing Christianist dogma down its cadets' throats, now this. Ol' Doc Dobson clearly rules the roost out there in that Rocky Mountain spring air.

Meanwhile, I'll take particular delight in knowing the Rockies will never win a World Series, precisely because it takes pitching and defense; the former, it is said, being 75% of the game. And everybody knows pitchers despise playing in Coors Field, it with its mile-high airless space facilitating game scores more suitable to the gridiron, invariably marked with a moon-shot or three hit by players not on steroids. Inevitably, then, Colorado will never carry a rotation and/or bullpen that could get them to The Promised Land... er, other than in their own wretchedly faithful minds, that is.

The upside to this? Red Sox Nation need be embarrassed no longer by the Carmine Hose carrying the friggin' mantle.

You Think I've Got Issues?

The Hollywood Liberal really has the Bush bug up its wazoo. And gahd bless 'em for it.

Long After Bush Is Gone, We'll Still Be Fighting These Vile Bastards!

Media consolidation per the Corporate FCC:
The Federal Communications Commission is poised to propose new media ownership rules that will allow media companies to own newspapers, television and radio stations in the same city, according to media watchdog groups.
The Oligarchy ever contends that less (diversity) is more. Coming soon: Pravda Reborn!

Take It To The Bank

R.J. Eskow has an interesting take on the apparent metamorphisis of Al Gore's personna and the prospect of his running again for president, comparing it to the primer How To Pick Up Girls:

Many guys put too much emphasis on learning "lines" and "techniques" when they are first starting down the path to success with women ... but the truth is you won't achieve the massive success you desire until it comes from inside of you. You should be totally detached from the "outcome" of any situation with a woman. What that means is that no matter what she says or does, your life goes on the same way. If a woman rejects you, it is no big deal. If a woman goes home with you, it is also no big deal. Try to become the guy who doesn't care either way. This attitude of indifference is magnetically attractive to women.

The same seems to be true of politicians. If winning and losing aren't important to you anymore, if they're just a laugh line ("I used to be your next President"), you become confident, self-contained, and attractive. The key is to be someone, autonomous and integrated, independent of the office you seek.
Be all this as it may, Al Gore will run for president in '08; not only because this bit of psychology is dead-on, but the question inexorably boils down to what Al Gore wants. Presumably it's to correct the misdirection toward environmental disaster into which the world is being steered. And he can only be thinking, "If not Al Gore, then who?"

Who indeed can make America kick its addiction for oil, and with it its massively destructive manifestations? Certainly not the Republicans. They've revealed themselves to be the impediment and not the solution.

Hillary? Are you kidding? Hillary's answer for cleaner air is to ban the burning of flags, what with all the carbon gasses they release into the atmosphere. I mean, c'mon!!

Al Gore knows this, and the Guardian, too, has its suspicions:

It is significant, however, that Mr Gore refuses to go beyond saying that he has no "plans" for such a campaign. "I haven't made a Shermanesque statement because it just seems odd to do so," he has said - a reference to the famous announcement by the civil war general William Sherman, who unequivocally refused to stand in the election of 1884. "If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve," General Sherman said.
Gore is keeping his powder dry, he knows the American M$M is stilted toward corporate interests, and Gore's campaign to fight Global Warming is anathema to... say, for example, General Electric, owner of NBC -- it, with its slew of chattering righties like Chris Matthews, Tucker Carlson, Tim Russert and Joe Scarborough; all of them, itching to trot out the same old crap about Gore's alleged eccentricities, and as preemptively as they can, even as they now slice & dice his movie An Inconvenient Truth.

Meanwhile, Hillary plays kissy-face with Rupert, and the bet here is Faux News will correspondingly fade out its "Get Hillary" reporting just as it sharpens its re-slander coverage of Gore.

The point being, Gore's playing cagey for a very good reason -- but he will run. He has to. Nobody else can or will do the job only he is in position to do, that is championing the Earth's physical salvation. . . and while doing so, releasing America from the choke-hold as applied by the Oligarchy.

"The Girls Died Screaming"

Saddam is on trial for war crimes committed in his name in a small Iraqi city. In that case, terrorists tied to the party of Al Dawa tried to assassinate the Iraqi leader. In retaliation, Iraqi forces are said to have killed scores of residents after arresting hundreds. So what, exactly, is the difference here? On behalf of President Bush, the U.S. Marines – whose culpability reportedly reaches far up the command – slaughtered dozens. Will the president be put in the dock, surrounded by Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, and the rest? It’s no wonder that in 2001 Bush opposed the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands. That ought not to stop the creation of a war crimes tribunal.

Not To Be Confused With The "Sweet Science"

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg with a nice line:

"Today, we are seeing hundreds of years of scientific discovery being challenged by people who simply disregard facts that don't happen to agree with their agenda," Mr. Bloomberg said. "Some call it pseudoscience, others call it faith-based science, but when you notice where this negligence tends to take place, you might as well call it 'political science.'"

Hope springs eternal; in this case, the GOP mayor of the greatest city in the world representing his party as having no place to go but up.

Righteous... !!

Moral Equivalence Or Moral Relativity?

George Galloway has a reputation that spans the Atlantic; one of irreverence, irrascibility, and just being a highly provocative curmudgeon (some might say "pain in the ass") with a powerful love of the sauce. Personally I find him highly entertaining, particularly when he pastes the likes of Norm Coleman, in that case during the former's testimony before the Senate Sweep-It-Under-The-Rug Committee.

I also like to think Galloway has a little courage too:

The Respect MP George Galloway has said it would be morally justified for a suicide bomber to murder Tony Blair.

In an interview with GQ magazine, the reporter asked him: "Would the assassination of, say, Tony Blair by a suicide bomber - if there were no other casualties - be justified as revenge for the war on Iraq?"

Mr Galloway replied: "Yes, it would be morally justified. I am not calling for it - but if it happened it would be of a wholly different moral order to the events of 7/7. It would be entirely logical and explicable. And morally equivalent to ordering the deaths of thousands of innocent people in Iraq - as Blair did."

It is imagined this bit of intellectual viscera will radiate across the pond as well, lapping our shores in an underlying current.

American Justice, Not Necessarily An Oxymoron

Kenny Boy takes it up the chute:
The verdict put the blame for the 2001 demise of the high-profile energy trader, once the nation's seventh-largest company, squarely on its top two executives. It came in the sixth day of deliberations following a trial that lasted nearly four months.
Lewis Black said it best about the Adelphia scandal, but I'll wonder aloud here: "I'm surprised their employees didn't rise up and slay them."

And while we're on the subject of justice in America, how goes it with the War Crimes Trial of the Bush Administration in 2010?

Alert Faux News

There's a fox pup running around my neighborhood. I've seen the little bugger three times now, the second time being the most remarkable. He, or she, was relaxing in the middle of the street until my car pulled up, his eyes glowing back at my headlights. I stopped and waited while he pondered the prospect of my going around. Eventually he upped and skedaddled, likely to laze elsewhere. I've only seen him at night, so if I was to deduce such things I'd say he was nocturnal.

There's no mistaking him for a more domesticated canine, this pup has unusally large, pointy ears as well as a short, needle-like snout. His thick coat has a blondish-reddish hue right down to his bushy tail. I'm no fancier but am fairly well-informed as to breeds of dog -- and this ain't no golden retriever. Curious, this, as my neighborhood is rather suburban, as in Leave It To Beaverish, sleepily interwoven throughout the industrialized edge city of Tysons Corner.

Although, having said that, I do remember having been startled a couple of years back when I was walking down a street in Georgetown on my way to the Watergate Hotel. Coming up from behind I could hear the scritchety scritch of what could only be a dog in full throttle, and which just as quickly scurried past me. It was the size of a beagle, maybe a little larger, but had longer, thicker hair.

Whoa! That was no dog.

I realized just then it was the fox -- or a fox -- one of maybe a few that had "terrorized" the locals, thus making for news over the previous couple of weeks that summer: "What Is a Fox Doing in Downtown DC?"; "Man & Nature Clash", etc. Whatever, I thought, it probably just wanted to check out the more interesting nightlife than what Rock Creek Park had to offer.

Alas, no chance of making the Georgetown scene for this little guy. Right behind it, and hot on its heels, a Park Police cop on the sprint as he blew past me, pistol in hand.

"Aw gee," I thought to myself, "poor little fellah!" (No! Not the cop!) I found myself rooting for it to get away when a second cop busted past.

I lost sight of them, then forgot about it. It was when I arrived at the hotel when I heard *CRACK!*, and turned my head in the direction from where I thought I heard the sound.

A long silence. Then *CRACK!*

I read the next day they had cornered the animal up against a building. The first shot got it in the foot. The second put out its lights.

The pup around here doesn't stick around for introductions. I was out for a power walk this evening and saw him about 25 yards in front of me, scritchety scritching across the street and into a bank of tall shrubs along my path. I did an about-face and went home. Not that he wouldn't be more afraid of me than I would be of a small wooded animal looking for a house cat on its own little prowl (one of many reasons, cat lovers, why indoor cats live to be 18, and outdoor cats 1.8), but you never know if it's hungry enough to attempt larger game.

Who needs that?

Lloyd Bentsen Dies

"Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy!"

I wonder what ran through Dan Quayle's mind when he heard today.
Which reminds me:
Q: What goes thru a bug's mind when it hits your windshield?
A: Its feet!

And come to think of it, doesn't Dubya kinda make Quayle seem - how you say? - "cerebral"?

Not A King, But...

Sent over by Brotherman the Elder...

BRITS REVOKE USA INDEPENDENCE (A Message from John Cleese To the citizens of the United States of America):

"In light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchica l duties over all states, commonwealths and territories (excepting Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Tony Blair, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then lookup aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and "neighbour.'

Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix -ize will be replaced by the suffix -ise. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels -- (look up vocabulary).

Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.

There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize.

You will relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen". July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.

All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) -- roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.

You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat , and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be r equired to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Audie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable.

You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

Thank you for your co-operation.

Me (5/19): where are the pentagon city fields... ? (for sunday softball)

Him (5/22 *monday*): Next to the Pentagon City Mall - corner of 15th and hayes.

Me: jeez, thanks for the timely timely...

Him (5/23): You emailed me on Friday night, when did you think I'd respond?

Me: uhhh, friday night... ? saturday... ? sunday morning... ?

Him: I'm kidding you of course... but I don't have a computer at home. If only I could find some way to fill my freezer with $100's...

which got me wound up...

Me: right, the dem exception that proves the republican-sale-of-america-to-the-highest-bidder rule... right sen. santorum... ? go ahead, run it by me again...

Him: Hey, I don't think either party can claim exceptions. For every Delay there's a Jefferson -- let's not forget the Wright-Rostenkowski-Clinton legacy. And I didn't even have to start picking on the unions...

Me: okay, you're comparing today with 12-20 years ago... and comparing delay w/jefferson is akin to comparing the sun w/an asteroid... only in this case, were looking at a coupla oblong rocks in space orbiting a multinary star system...

moreover, the dems *never* had corporate whores writing the legislation ON EVERYTHING, or passing around graft checks on the house floor, or abdicated their oversight authority as this administration is systematically converting a republic into what SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR fears is becoming a "dictatorship"...

but while we're still on the most corrupt congress in american history, the dems in their wildest dreams could never come up with "the k st project"...

and clinton's legacy... ? what was that again... ? a blow job... ? excuse me... ?

how many soldiers were killed and/or maimed because of that... ? how many tens, nay, hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians destroyed... ?

does the world despise america because clinton got his knob polished... ?

or were you referring to the clinton legacy of the largest peacetime surplus in world history... ?

gotta get a freakin' grip, friend... meanwhile, i'll have to reload if i'm gonna keep shooting down all the repo talking points...

So Long, Joeyyyy... So Long Joeyyy...

Okay, this has me a little giddy:
It just happened. Connecticut Bob just called, and with just under half the votes cast, Ned Lamont forced the primary. 243-512, WOOO HOOO!!!!!
I rather enjoy the thought of what might be going through the minds of Lieberman, Hillary The Whore, and whatever Vichy DLCer there be left, right about now.

It's gonna be fun this primary season.

That Which Does Not Kill You...

I know, I go silent for long periods of time, and then I'm compelled to comment on someone like Britney, a fucking dope if there ever was one, and a George Bush supporter. (All very redundant, yes, I know that too.) Clearly she has her own method in making her kid, uhm, stronger:
Britney Spears' child-care techniques seem to be growing positively "Toxic" - she nearly dropped her 8-month-old son on his head yesterday as she tottered out of a posh Manhattan hotel with a glass in one hand and the tyke in another.
At least the kid's getting his money's worth in entertainment.

Workin' the Wknd

There's something to be said about living in a bubble. Not very kosher if one is the POTUS, but quite useful it be if one needs relief from the bonehead-in-chief.

Snap-polls by the corrupted WaPo notwithstanding, the corresponding approvals dropping to 29%, while those polled would seem to have no problem, at least preliminarily (i.e., before they had a chance to think about it), w/the NSA data-mining of their phone-calling, illustrates well the bipolar disorder that is the collective American conciousness today.

So I enter my bubble, cruising down the highway in my good gas-mileage set of wheels, turn to a music station w/minimal chatter from DJs or newswonks, and I think about seeing my family this Mem-day wknd up in PA as we celebrate my niece's graduation.

I have excellent siblings, and I like their kids. And they are the only reason I would go to fight an external threat, real or faith-based. I'm not some fool-romantic caught up in God or country; not anymore. Fool me three times... Go to hell!

Jesus! I'm all over the place this morning...

Back in the bubble... !! Hmmmhmmhmmm... La la la...

Who Said It?

“The interesting thing about [George Washington] is that I read three or four books about him last year. Isn't that interesting?”...
Was it:

A) Rocket J. Squirrel... ?

B) Dave, the 'tard who hangs out by the waterfront... ? or

C) George W. Bush, President of the United States... ?

... not a trick question...

Hillaryous

In case the former first lady doesn't actually read the blogs, Markos posts in the Post:
Just as we crazy political junkies glimpsed the viability of the candidacy of an obscure governor from a small New England state three years ago, today we regard Hillary Clinton's candidacy as anything but inevitable. Her obstacles are big, and from this vantage point, possibly insurmountable.
I'm telling you right now, it's gonna be Al Gore...

Reformed Souls

Not to be confused w/re-formed souls, Jeff Gannon beat Tom Cruise to the punch, announcing publicly that he, Gannon, is indeed a 3-dollar bill. Get used to it!
Yet perhaps the most stunning of Gannon's comments was his assertion that he supports "outing" gays who live one life and vote another. Gannon – who himself was "outed" as a former sex worker without his consent – said that he supported the outing of erstwhile Virginia Congressman Ed Schrock (R-VA), who resigned in disgrace after Rogers posted tapes of him soliciting gay sex on the Internet.
Let us hope, then, that just as the drunk pushes the 12-step, or the smoker, only 5 days off a 23-year habit, might have it, Gannon carries with his new agenda a zeal that puts a real hurtin' on the remaining closeted, pillow-biting bastards.

Not So Strange Bedfellows

eMail Received (and beware these flaming liberals):

Dear Friend,

Provide Jim the resources to win. Contribute Today!

Today, I ask you to join me in supporting Jim Webb's campaign for U.S. Senate.

Jim has dedicated most of his adult life to issues surrounding our national security. He has never backed away from a fight, whether it has been in combat, or in the all-important political arena in which our nation's future is being resolved. In addition, as a Vietnam veteran I have always been grateful to Jim for the thousands of hours he has spent, pro bono, helping those who served in Vietnam. He is just the kind of leader the Senate needs.

I would like nothing more than to work side-by-side with Jim Webb in the U.S. Congress. But to do this, Jim must win the June 13th primary, and what is sure to be a bruising general election against George Allen. Please provide Jim the resources he needs to win in June and this November. Contribute today!

http://webb.bluestatedigital.com/page/m/1du6akebvln/Y9ca0e

I spent 37 years in the Marine Corps, joining military service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. I've represented the people of Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district since 1974. I've dedicated my entire life to public service, to fighting for the issues to ensure our country is safe.

As some of you may know, I have been very critical of the war in Iraq. The Administration has pursued bad policy wrapped in an illusion.

And Jim called it before most of us. He wrote the first article in a major newspaper, five months before the war, predicting exactly what was going to happen if we invaded Iraq. Imagine what the debate would have looked like in the Senate if Jim Webb had been there instead of George Allen.

Because we in Congress are charged with overseeing the safety of our sons and daughters when the president sends them into battle, it is our responsibility, our obligation to speak out for them.

It's time to add Jim to ongress.

Contribute today. Give Jim the funds he needs to get his message out to all Virginians.

Jim Webb, through his charisma and leadership, can bring a wide array of voters back to the Democratic party. Thank you for helping him.

Sincerely,

Congressman John Murtha

Stephen Colbert: Super Hero

Looks like Colbert's performance last Saturday night is going to stick in the media craw for a while, now that the moribund M$M is getting around to defending itself. Adding these two bits as illustrative of my attitude:

from Salon:

Colbert's deadly performance did more than reveal, with devastating clarity, how Bush's well-oiled myth machine works. It exposed the mainstream press' pathetic collusion with an administration that has treated it -- and the truth -- with contempt from the moment it took office. Intimidated, coddled, fearful of violating propriety, the press corps that for years dutifully repeated Bush talking points was stunned and horrified when someone dared to reveal that the media emperor had no clothes. Colbert refused to play his dutiful, toothless part in the White House correspondents dinner -- an incestuous, backslapping ritual that should be retired. For that, he had to be marginalized. Voilà: "He wasn't funny."
and from James Wolcott:

A note about the Stephen Colbert monologue at the Correspondents' Dinner that Elisabeth Bumiller seems to have slept through face-down in her entree. No question the stint played better on TV than it did in the room with C-SPAN cutting to gowned lovelies in the audience with glaceed expressions and tuxedo'd men making with the nervous eyes, but to say he "bombed" or "stunk up the place" (Jonah Goldberg's usual elegance) is wishful thinking on behalf of the wishful thinkers on the right, who have nothing but
wishful thinking to prop them up during the day.

I know what bombing looks like. It looks like Don Imus when he did a standup monologue before President and Hillary Clinton, and went over so badly that sweat broke out in rivulets down his face and in parts unseen. What triggered the perspiration cascade was a sexual innuendo about how Clinton rooted for his favorite football team by yelling, "Go baby!" at the TV, which Imus remarked was probably not the first time he had voiced such a giddyup--an allusion to Clinton's poontang exploits, if you'll pardon the expression. Imus gave such a crass performance and caused such embarrassment to himself and everybody in the room that there were calls for apologies and he was in danger of being as contaminated as Whoopie Goldberg and Ted Danson briefly were after their unfortunate blackface episode.

See, that was Colbert's mistake. He didn't slip in any smutty lines. Had he done so, his standup would have been impossible to ignore as the Fox News hotheads would have one into full outrage mode to defend the honor of Laura Bush and her virgin ears. Instead, Colbert was cool, methodical, and mercilessly ironic, not getting rattled when the audience quieted with discomfort (and resorting to self-deprecating "savers," as most comedians do), but closing in on the kill, as unsparing of the press as he was of the president. I mean no disrespect to Jon Stewart to say that in the same circumstances, he would have resorted to shtick; Colbert didn't. Apart from flubbing the water-half-empty joke about Bush's poll ratings, he was in full command of his tone, comic inflection, and line of attack. The we-are-not-amused smile Laura Bush gave him when he left the podium was a priceless tribute to the displeasure he incurred. To me, Colbert looked very relaxed after the Bushes left the room and he greeted audience members, signed autographs. And why wouldn't he be? He achieved exactly what he wanted to achieve, delivered the message he intended to deliver. Mission accomplished.

I saw it. I didn't find it especially funny either. It was, however, brilliant!

Stephen Colbert had a captive audience of precisely those responsible for the world's current discomfiture... and he made them uncomfortable. Up to the moment he took the stage, they were well fed, sufficiently liquored, and insufferably full of themselves. And he handed them a full-length mirror, with which to observe their glorious selves.

It was a catharsis. And pity -- or revile (take your pick) -- the ones who didn't "get it!"

A Democratic Revolution?

Charlie Cook is considered in these parts as the preeminent analyst and forecaster for all political races in America today:

To take over [the Senate in '06], Democrats must win the open seat in Tennessee, where the winner of the August 3 Republican primary will face Democratic Rep. Harold Ford. If Republicans hold Tennessee, they hold the Senate. If they have a truly horrible night and lose Tennessee, they lose the Senate.

But should the GOP's chances of picking up the open seat in Minnesota be dismissed so casually? Yes, even though Republicans have an excellent candidate in Rep. Mark Kennedy. And the same is true for the party's chances in Washington state, where the GOP is fielding a formidable challenger to Sen. Maria Cantwell. The fact is, if the political environment is so anti-Republican that five incumbents lose, then the GOP won't be able to gain ground in any Senate race. So, under the Republican apocalypse scenario, the Senate comes down to Tennessee.

The Real America

Holy Cow! An enlightened jury:
A federal jury has decided that al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui will receive a sentence of life in prison for not telling investigators what he later claimed to have known about the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

After seven days of deliberation, the jury informed the court that it had come to its decision earlier this afternoon. The unexpectedly long duration of juror debate was read as an indicator that Moussaoui may have been spared death.
Of course, the cynic would say he was spared death precisely because he had wished for it. Even so, it's a statement about America where the rod is spared, and for which I can take a little pride in my country. S'been a while...

Net Neutrality

Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts states precisely the issue at hand if the Repos and DINOs take the Internet away:
Do we really have to wait till these corporate giants divide and conquer the open architecture of the Internet to make that against the law? These telephone company executives are telling us that they intend to discriminate in the prioritization of bits and to discriminate in the offering of "quality of service" functions - for a new fee, a new broadband bottleneck toll - to access high bandwidth customers. We cannot afford to wait until they actually start doing that before we step in to stop it.
Markey: proof positive that real Dems still live.

And The Reviews Are In

If you hadn't heard by now, Stephen Colbert fucking scorched Dubya and the media elite to their faces at the Correspondent's (or as the Ex- liked to call it: The GroupJerk) Dinner Saturday night.

The Traditional Media is doing their level best to ignore his brilliant performance, but it's only a matter of time. E.g., Didn't see it yet (as I catch the midnight rerun), but I'm betting Olberman'll have a piece on it. Meanwhile, here's a sampling:

Crooks & Liars (w/video)...
The Raw Story...
Salon (so watch the freakin' commercial, this one's worth it)...
Think Progress (relaying the humorless Faux News input)...
Whiskey Bar (by way of HuffPo)...
DailyKos...

for starters...

Of course, the funniest part in all this was the Republicans were sidling up to Colbert during the meteoric assent of his program The Colbert Report.

Think they'll shy away a little now?

WWJD

Wow! I thought I was keen of mind at 15 (give or take the usual adolescent brainfart).

No way I was this saavy...
