dennis the menace...

Did I say "menace"? I meant Superhero!

Concerning the possible resolution against Bush, Swanson said Kucinich "wanted to let everyone know that he will not only continue pushing for the impeachment of Cheney but will also take up the impeachment of Bush with a new resolution."
The beauty of his efforts here involves doing an end-run around the vile 3-toed sloth that is Pelosi, Hoyer and Emanuel. And -- Oh my Gahd! -- he's getting the Republicans to help:

Although the roll call vote had initially appeared to favor Hoyer's motion to table, Congressional Quarterly's Ed Epstein told CSPAN that Republicans had switched their votes at the last minute in an attempt to embarrass the Democratic leadership, who is not keen on seeing further action on the impeachment resolution.
I'm all in favor of embarrassing Dem leaders, raggedly limp-members that they be, but the bet here is Republicans are once again overplaying their hand (their raison d'etre), assuming their only reason to table the table is to "embarrass the Democratic leadership" while not considering the American people may get behind this effort like they never would for Clinton's impeachment.

Considering the M$M hasn't picked it up yet, another bet here is this will take on a life of its own. A majority of Dems in the House cannot possibly not vote to Impeach if it gets thru committee. And by the time it gets to the Senate, it'll be bigger news than Iraq.

Game on!

----------
Update: Okay, civics lesson for me:
So the bill goes to the Judiciary Committee. Where it will sit next to Kucinich's other resolution calling for the impeachment of Cheney, which was offered through regular channels back in April.
But didn't I read somewhere that Conyers might be itching to pull the trigger too? Ah, yesss... !

whilst i drive... and dream...

I think I've developed a pathological hatred for cab drivers. Though I wouldn't call it a proper statistical sampling, I've had my share of encounters nonetheless.

New York: Are 10 out of every 12 cars in this town actually large yellow taxis pedal-to-the-metal? Pedestrians, by definition, can't be too bright attempting to cross 5th Avenue... or 1st Avenue or Madison Avenue, whathaveyou. These psychotic bastards blaze and careen in fleets; 3 or 4 wide, 6 or 9 deep. Traffic lights be damned! We are the champions, my friends, and we'll keep on flying to your end. I swear, some of them have humanoid silhouettes pasted on their doorsides.

Washington D.C.: The most timid little wankers on wheels (courtesy of Fred's two feet). Slow. Slower. Slowest. You honk at 'em from behind -- Get a move-on, fucker! That only slows 'em down. I fantasize being on one of those Cop-video shows where I tap their bumper and watch 'em fishtail off the side of Key Bridge.

Boston: These are the most maddening sonsabitches. Drive in the left lane. Always. Go the speed limit. Never more (quothe the Raven), never less. Unless, of course, you try to pass 'em; then they fuck with you. Which ought to make for a tidy summary of their collective conciousness: "We drive to fuck witchu, mahn!"

And which brings me to my other fantasy, sort of a Double-Oh-Seven-Dr.-No feature: An anti-grav ray that I can activate with a button. My grill recedes under my hood and a beam fires out at the car in front of me. Nothing happens at first, but then, subtlely, the targetted chassis lifts up, then the wheels come off the ground.

Up, up... up... a tiny blip in the sky. And then... gone.

Sometimes I imagine the car returns gently back to the lane from whence it came and continues onward -- after I'm long gone. Other times it rises to the stratosphere and then comes crashing violently back to Earth. And then there are the times I will the car to reach escape velocity, leaving the planet entirely. Of course the Sun's gravity-well grabs hold of it, drawing it toward its inevitable doom. The bet then is whether the car and its passengers burns to a cinder before or during its crash into the Sun's corona, or maybe the vacuum of space makes them bloat beyond capacity, eyeballs bulging and protruding outward...

... just before they go *Pop!*

safe than sorry, better to be...

Decided to bag the drive north this morning. Hurricane Noel is already kicking ass along the eastern seaboard, and I figure three hours of wind gusts and steady rain is a hair too treacherous if not inadvisable.

See you next weekend, Mom?

well, he's right...

Cesca's header in HuffPo: Crazy Bush Compares Democrats To Nazi Appeasers

Not in the context he implied, but as far as where Schumer & Feinstein giving the ole to Michael Mukasey, I'd say Dubya was spot on.

Of course, that means the Bush Administration = the Nazis in this equation.

friday nite lite... wishing i was lit...

I suppose I could've said something about the Sox winning the thing, but I've been fighting a persistent dry hack for two weeks now and, well, I'm just not that into the Sox as I used to be. Oh, I enjoyed the right proper stomping of the Christianist Rockies, but my Sox fever was broken and has been for some time, which I realized once Grady Little farted away an appearance in the '03 World Series to the Yankees -- and I didn't rage, but merely steamed. Thank Bill Buckner for that innoculation oh so long ago, eh?

Totally psyched I am, however, to catch the Pats/Colts mid-season SuperBowl on Sunday. Not certain where I'll catch it, but I figure I'll be on the road back from Maine prior to. Gotta visit my mom, who's in the hospital recovering from an elderly fractured pelvic girdle. Brutal! But what a tough nut she is, me mum, even if cracked. She fell and she got up!

I read today Schumer & Feinstein caved on the torture-apologist AG nomination today. No surprise. Schumer has ever been the pathetic milquetoast and Feinstein needs to shave her ears. Like, how 'bout it, California? Let's kick that old, whiskered tree-shrew to the curb, shall we?

So, what say to a bottle of red; pick up the DVDs (Spiderman 3; episodes of The L Word and The Rockford Files) at the P.O.; drop off the watched vids (Rescue Me and The Sopranos) at the store, grab a hot sub and turn in?

It's been a week.

great!! news on a friday...

The question here is: when does Hillary sic her goons on him?

Less than a week ago, shortly after he announced for president, Stephen Colbert was favored by only a little more than 2% of Democrats as the favorite for the nomination. Now, a Rasmussen Report national telephone survey has found that he gains 13% of voters in a matchup with Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Hillary Clinton.

With former Sen. Fred Thompson substituted for Giuliani, the host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report still got 12%.

If he keeps gaining over 10% a week, Colbert should be leading the field before November is out.

----------
Addendum:
Had to add this bit of insightful insight:

But [one] observed: "I know that Colbert's candidacy is a joke, but the fact remains that he is the only "candidate" to directly confront George Bush and the media elite. I think that's why he is gaining support.

Even though he is a comedian, he has heart, brains and courage. That separates him from the rest of the pack."

lions & tigers & bears, oh my... !

Some right-wingnut group called Family Security Matters has come out with a Top-10 list, i.e., The Top-10 Most Dangerous Organizations. Of course, I've provided links to all of them (some of which have been linked for some time by this site -- Ooooo!!):

10) ThinkProgress
9) Muslim Student Association
8) CodePINK
7) American Civil Liberties Union, National
6) Family Research Council
5) Center for American Progress
4) League of the South
3) MoveOn.org
2) Universities and Colleges
1) Media Matters for America

Nos. 6 & 4, I find curious. The former is the rightwing Christian group run by Tony Perkins. (You remember Psycho? -- no, not that Tony Perkins; this is a different kinda psycho.) The latter is a secessionist group of chuckleheads who just can't get over the fact they lost.

So if I were to guess, then -- and I'm not at all familiar with Family Security Matters (except that it's name and list of board-members implies it's pro-police state) -- I'd say the FRC & the League are viewed by this group as loose cannons and will have to be put down when the balloon goes up.

Meanwhile, what to do with the Universites and Colleges -- those bastards!!

the more things change...

Sydney Blumenthal has a marvelous essay on Walter Lippman in Salon, illustrating well the corporate media as being ever thus:
By substituting propaganda for truth, brandishing jingoism to enforce conformity, and asserting arrogance and certainty over skepticism and humility, Lippmann contended, the manufacturers of consent confounded democracy. "In so far as those who purvey the news make of their own beliefs a higher law than truth, they are attacking the foundations of our constitutional system. There can be no higher law in journalism than to tell the truth and shame the devil."

headline of the day...

RUDY THE YANKEE FLIPPER
MASS.-KISSER ROOTS FOR RED SOX

Okay, so what if it is the NYPost? It's a hoot!

why do they hate us so... (not a question)...

Given that tonight presents Game 1 of the 2007 World Series, let us keep in perspective:
[I]t was impossible for me to deny that Boston is enjoying what may be the most mind-boggling run in modern sports history.

Not only are the Red Sox in the World Series for the second time in four years (thanks to an epic comeback against the Cleveland Indians), and not only are the 7-0 Patriots looking utterly invincible, and not only have the Celtics managed to assemble a trio of all-stars (Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce & Ray Allen) to rival the Big Three of yore, but even the Bruins are off to their best start in years. Oh, and the Boston College Eagles are ranked Number 2 in the nation.
The allegory here, of course, is the way Boston sports fans are viewed by the rest of America, i.e., precisely the same way Americans are viewed today by the rest of the world.

----------
Addendum: Wow! Steve Almond really speaks my language:
They have all the passion and knowledge you could ever want. No argument there. But they're also tragically attached to their own martyrdom. If you gave the diehards truth serum, I suspect at least a few would admit to some disappointment at having won the World Series after '86 years. They used to be Major League Baseball's most famous hard-luck case. Now, they're just another big-market bully with cash to throw around.

Oh sure, the fans still complain. But it's just not the same.

And so, oddly, even as an avowed Red Sox hater, I sometimes find myself rooting for the team. If triumph is the worst punishment they can suffer, let them suffer all week.

now that's entertainment... !!

This oughta make Olbermann 2nite (link to video):

"Blood of millions of Iraqis is on your hands," the protester told Rice, who was President Bush's national security adviser when he decided to invade Iraq.

"War criminal! ... War Criminal!" the black-clad, "blood"-soaked protester screamed as authorities dragged her from a hearing room on Capitol Hill. "Take her to the Hague."

MoveOn And Top Bloggers To Launch Campaign Pressuring Hillary And Obama To Back Dodd On FISA

This could get interesting.

----------
Update: Glenn Greenwald, doing his part:

The Clinton and Obama campaigns should still be called today and an answer to that question ought to be demanded. They can be reached here:
* Clinton Presidential: (703) 469-2008
* Clinton Senate: (202) 224-4451
* Obama Presidential: (866) 675-2008
* Obama Senate: (202) 224-2854

----------
Update II: Looks like it's working:

Obama Camp Says It: He'll Support Filibuster Of Any Bill Containing Telecom Immunity

No definitive word from Hillary yet. And no surprise there.

stark apologizes for being spot on...

This is so damnably annoying:

Republicans talk the most vile shit about their political enemies and never bend. Democrats talk truth to power and are forever made to apologize.

Another very good reason to smoke pot: it curbs the throes of nausea.

----------
Update: From Firedog Lake:
I called Stark’s office in DC to complain about his apology. The person answering the phone told me that Stark had no choice; Stark was told before the vote was taken that should he not apologize, the vote to censure would pass. According to his office, that is the only reason he apologized.

but then...

Shirley MacLaine says Dennis Kucinich is a UFO devotee? No biggie, says I. But then I'm not an hysterical Republican.

Responding to David Kurtz' latest comment:
I would draw a distinction between assuming there is other life in the universe and thinking it is sending you messages.
I agree wholeheartedly. But then (again) I'm none too shy in dismissing Christianity as the greatest and cruelest hoax ever perpetrated upon humanity.

pete stark rocks... !

... and of course the repos are whining about it; and of course nancy pelosi belches words like "inappropriate". Feh!

taking the vichy out of the democrats...

If there was any doubt about Harry Reid being a snivelling wretch of a "leader," his office's announcement that he'd ignore Senator Dodd's hold on the Fuck Americans Act, i.e., the caving to the giant telecoms by granting them amnesty for their wholesale eavesdropping on Americans, ought have removed it; ironic given he once referred to Alan Greenspan as "one of the biggest political hacks we have in Washington." Now that the latter is out of everyday politics in our nation's capital, perhaps Reid is jockeying for position?

So Progressive Americans clearly have a two-front war: Fighting the criminally vile Republican party, and the now open expansion of the corporate LeiberDem/DLC wing of the Democratic party. No more pussy-footing about it:
Reid must honor and support Dodd's hold on FISA.

But it's not just about this one action from Reid. Democrats have got to
quit supporting Democrats who haven't got the spine or the temperament for a fight. We need Democrats who understand that even when you don't have the votes to get the job done, making a public case with passion and purpose is just as important.
Dodd's stock is rising quickly with Progressives after he announced his intention to filibuster the FISA legislation as a counter to Reid's intended betrayal of one of his own. It might also behoove the sound-bite specialists in Dodd's presidential campaign to start peppering Hillary with the nickname "Loyal Bushie" a few times. See if it doesn't stick.

Sports talk in this town is as would be expected, and just how the sandwich maker allowed while the game was on last night: "I'm so pissed!"

I had to laugh.

It's complete: I can't be bothered with what happens to the Sox. I can't even help but admire the Indians. This kid Peralta at shortstop is a stud. I expect Theo to sign him to a multi-year contract after next year, after he signs yet another flameout shortstop to replace F'ing Lugo.

And speaking of Vincent's l'il brother, is it me or does his signing of J.D. Drew for an obscene amount of money for too goddamn many years resemble too closely the Dems in Congress bending knee repeatedly to the War Criminal in Chief?

We all KNOW its wrong. We all KNOW its stupid! And yet we're relegated to watching the little tweeting birdies revolve about our heads while wondering WTF??

the wknd that was...

Blessed are New Englanders, if for no other reason than for its sports teams, which have served as a grand paliative, providing a distraction from the everyday trials & tribulations of living a life of quiet desperation, from having to witness the wanton and vile corruption of our federal government and our society as a whole, the rampant lawlessness of the haves and much less so of the have-nots.

And then it occurred: Must really suck being a New York fan these days!

Jeffrey Toobin illustrates the sky as indeed falling:
Mr. TOOBIN: You know, I went to a speech that Justice Scalia gave at a synagogue here in New York a couple of years ago, and someone asked him, `What's the difference between your judicial philosophy and Justice Thomas?' I thought a very good question. And Scalia talked for a while and he said, `Look, I'm a conservative. I'm a texturalist. I'm an originalist. But I'm not a nut.' And I thought that...
GROSS: Meaning that he thinks Thomas is one.
Mr. TOOBIN: Well, that was certainly the implication.
GROSS: Mm-hmm.
Mr. TOOBIN: It was pretty amazing. I mean, Thomas is well outside the mainstream, even of the conservatives on the court.
And who else knew Scalia, the Tony Soprano of the judiciary, wasn't a nut?

Listening to UMass make a game of it w/Boston College. I say "listening" because local Boston TV ain't broadcasting it. I mean Jesus! -- we can watch VA Tech v. North Carolina, or Yale v. Holy Cross, or Notre Fucking Dame crap themselves yet again, but not B.C. v. another university from Massachusetts IN BOSTON!?? Must be true what they say about the Amherst campus never getting its due respect with the local media here. But at the cost of blowing off their beloved Eagles?? WTF?

Gave me a good excuse to go hit some golf balls. Nice day.

But back to the broadcast at a commercial: "This is Doug Flutie here to talk about [some generic jewelry store]. I always go to [some generic jewelry store] for all my fine jewelry needs!"

C'mon, Dougie! All your "fine jewelry needs"? Let's assume you do haul yer white-bred suburban ass to go buy rings'n things more than twice in a decade, yer still a freakin' football player ferchrissakes! Can't you even use the word bling?

flashback...

Sox fans: Good seats available: Just $495 a pair

Which reminded me of senior year, Somerville High, in '77. L'il bro, he a frosh at B.C. High, & I decided to play hooky, first time in my life, to go to opening day at Fenway. Bleacher seats: $3.00 a pop! I kid u not!

This, of course was just after the Sox signed one of the first free agents right after the reserve clause was overturned: Bill Campbell, state-of-the-art closer, formerly of the Minnesota Twins.

A gorgeous day as I recall, Cleveland in town, Dennis Eckersley starting for the Tribe. And y'know, I can't even recall who the Sox gave Cleveland for the Eck, but I do remember the Sox trading Eck to the Cubs for Bill Buckner, but that's another insane story.

Anyhoo! Bleachers! Fenway Pahk! Opening day!

Sign on the back wall: "Sell Campbell! Bring back $1.50 bleachers!"

had 'em all the way...

Sox clinch A.L. East!

don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes...

Nice piece in the Globe on the current Minuteman RB Matt Lawrence.

Given UMass has a Nat'l championship, '98 v. Georgia Southern, and came within a quarter of a second last January against Appalachian State, I've taken a keen interest in realizing their talent, particularly at RB, is of NFL caliber. Two of Lawrence's predecessors, for example, are with the AZ Cardinals: Marcel Schipp, back-up to Edgerrin James, and Steve Baylark, rookie on their practice squad.

Gotta think their QB Liam Coen stands a chance of getting drafted when the time comes.

Meanwhile, HUGE game saturday at Chestnut Hill against the #11 B.C. Eagles. 'D'be a mighty tasty follow-up to App State's bouncing Michigan opening day this season.

proud to be a patriots fan...

Posted on my Fantasy Football message board:

"Dan--- Please make sure you change [g.'s] team name to 'Cheater-town and Maine'."
My first reaction, as the owner of the "Boston & Maine" fantasy football team, was to take this as tongue-in-cheek. Q is a good guy, whom I've known for several years. And even though he's a J'ints fan, he's honorable if highly competitive, and the jibe looks to be nothing more than a dribble of testosterone, a hardy fellow's pot-shot across the bow as it were. No big deal.

But there's a part of this business that annoys. In case you didn't hear, we the people of New England are not defending the crap Bill Belichick pulled with the video camera. Moreover, his taciturn disposition in expressing his remorse, or the lack thereof, has made him no friends and could very well have set Patriot Nation to actually reconsider its reverence for "The Genius". In fact, my sense is he could very well be done at season's end. His contract is up, and, even before this shinola hit the fan, talk was he was indicating, though not directly saying, a need for new vistas. At this point, one can easily consider this a good idea; all of which makes the head spin at how quickly the world has turned inside-out.

How it plays, of course, depends upon whether or not the team can maintain its level of excellence. The players, by association, are besmirched by this scandal. Of course, they've shown many times in the past that any such distractions are other people's problems and not theirs. Having said that, it is suspected each and every warrior clad in Red, White, Blue & Silver will be wanting to prove mightily that it is, and always has been, more their talent and discipline comprising the main ingredients of their 3-Championship elixir, and less the insider's knowledge.

Given they were deemed heavy favorites to win the '08 Super Bowl entering this season, they were also viewed as needing something a little more tangible in the way of an us-against-them motivation anyway. Well, they certainly have it now.

Meanwhile, Giants & Jets & Skins fans, oh my, are treating this seamy and unseemly grist as manna from heaven. Perhaps they ought pay heed to ESPN commentator and former NFL signal-caller Sean Salisbury, for example, who quite rightly dismisses anyone who contends the videotaping of an opponent's hand signals and then, within a 12-minute halftime window, can correctly decode and translate that information into a successful 2nd-half plan-of-action, all the while assuming the opponent's signals weren't changed, and is even indirectly responsible for the Patriots winning three (3) NFL championships, as absurd. Which means those clamoring for their "ring back," Hines Ward, need to redivert themselves from what amounts to nothing more than rank and venomous envy.

But it is indeed sad these also-rans see fit to take license in conflating Belichick's apparent lack of character as a flaw in the city itself.

Boston is America's "Cradle of Liberty", and has been around for quite some time, exhibiting to the world a gold standard of living, of education, civil liberties, fellowship, and -- yes, Goshdarnit! -- Sportsmanship!... or perhaps you've never heard of those Celtics fans of lore, say, who, upon realizing the '82 Dr. J. 76ers would prevail over Larry Bird and the Celtics in the NBA Eastern Finals, began chanting at the Garden as the seconds ticked down: "Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.!"

Funny how I don't recall New York or Philadelphia fans as doing something like that. Ever! And today, Boston sportsfans are making absolutely no excuses for their "Genius" coach, but are, in fact, coming down hard on him.

I've written in this space before on the passion cum mania of the Boston sportsfans. It is overwhelming, and, having witnessed it as one who attended many games in Baltimore, it can be most obnoxious.

But this is my town and these are my people. They are me.

I am a Bostonian!

And today the Patriots are mine.

one of yer better sundays...

Who ever objected to hand-me-downs didn't have mine as brothers.

For my birthday a couple of weeks ago, younger brother gave me a complete set of used, although newly-gripped, and just plain mighty fine golf clubs, while elder brother provided an old pair of fairway spikes and passes to one of the nicer public-18s, i.e., in Brookline, with which the three of us, along with elder's old army buddy, tee'd off this morning at 8:00 a.m. The forecast promised t-storms, prompting elder to suggest that, should it indeed storm with the usual bolts from the gray/blue, I should stand still holding my 3-iron aloft. I grinned and said, "and do it over there?"

But the skies withheld, although the humidity had already dropped precipitously from yesterday, and made for a right pleasant morning of recreation and exercise. Don't ask me the score, I'm new at the game and I've been assured rookies receive a year's reprieve from the golfing Gods.

So we had some fun and felt pretty good about ourselves, then off we went caravanning the surface streets of Beantown to Southie and Amrhein's for a fabulicious brunch and the pleasure of watching your! New England Patriots stomp the ever-loving beJesus out of the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets. Take that New Yawk!!

Is why I moved back up here, don'tcha know: Days like this.

And what better bit of alarm, at which to bark up, than our Dear Leader Commander Guy ordering the use of nukes against Iran?
Now maybe there is an innocent explanation for this? I can’t think of one. What is certain is that the pilots of this plane did not just make a last minute decision to strap on some nukes and take them for a joy ride. We need some tough questions and clear answers. What the hell is going on? Did someone at Barksdale try to indirectly warn the American people that the Bush Administration is staging nukes for Iran? I don’t know, but it is a question worth asking.

die, radio shack... ! die... !!

This keeps up, I might as well start up a consumer's blog.

I've been down on Radio Shack -- or as I like to call 'em: Radio Shank -- since the time I bought a cordless phone for my apartment in Arlington. The warranty on the battery was a year.

It crapped out on me in 6 months.

I go back to the store for another battery.

They don't sell them retail.

6-8 weeks for delivery of another battery. And this a couple of years before I bought a cell phone.

Meanwhile, I don't have a phone that works.

Fuckers!

Today, several years later, I caved and went back (only electronics store in the vicinity) to buy a hands-free wire for my cell.

Doesn't work.

die, t.mobile... ! die... !!!

I am profoundly disappointed to learn, apparently too late to satisfy T-Mobile, that my text messaging costs went up 5 cents per message starting 6/1/07.

Since my contract with T.Mobile was renewed 8/30/06 and expires on 8/29/07, I conclude this raise in my cost to be arbitrary and a breach of contract by T.Mobile.

I called customer service to complain and spoke to a "Paul," who informed me, in an obsequious, sing-songy manner (please make them stop that!!), that T.Mobile would agree to this being a breach of contract EXCEPT for the fact T.Mobile alledgedly alerted its customers to the impending increase in cost via pamphlets in the mail, establishing an, again, arbitrary time-period for customers to cancel their accounts without penalty. Oh! And not to worry: T-Mobile lowered the rates of picture-messaging.

UNACCEPTABLE!! I don't picture-message, if that is a verb! And lowering the rate for others certainly does NOT justify raising my rate within the confines of an agreed-upon contract.

Moreover, I never received any such an alert! Thus can I only conclude T-Mobile never sent it or sent it to the wrong address.

Either way, I demand satisfaction!

I never agreed to an increase in text-messaging cost. My contract stipulates text messages to be 10 cents and not 15 cents!

I demand you reimburse the difference established on 6/1/07 or I shall certainly take my business elsewhere.

Sincerely,

what fools these mortal bostonians be...

I'd been grousing about the palpable mania emanating online, along the airwaves, from the printed page -- yea, verily, from the pores of the city itself. Boston is Just! Freakin'! Nuts! about its sports teams (and I am compelled to use the possessive singular, as this city seems a sentient entity unto itself). I thought it was nuts when I first lived here in the late 70s and for five years in the 80s. Heck! I was nuts too, but nothing like this town is today.

Just in the last couple of days the biorythms have spiked exponentially, what with the arrivals of Kevin Garnett and Eric Gagne. Today's Herald, in a fairly subdued manner here, explains:
Yesterday, in fact, was a truly eye-opening day in the recent history of Boston sports. While the Celtics were all but adding the 6-foot-11 Garnett to the city skyline, the Red Sox were acquiring reliever Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers. In the last four months, Moss, Garnett and Gagne all made sacrifices to bring their talents to Boston, just as Schilling did when he arrived from the Arizona Diamondbacks in November 2003.

So now here we are, in Summer 2007, and it seems as if each new season brings another major announcement. Sox starter
Daisuke Matsuzaka is Japanese, Garnett and Moss are African-American, Gagne is Canadian. They all could have chosen not to come. Yet, they all now belong to Boston, and you can’t help but get the feeling the city is growing a little more each day, inside the walls and out.
Ah yes. Bostonians live & die with the wins & losses. They eat, sleep and shit Sox, Pats and Shamrocks; and they'd like to bleed Bruin if they could (but they can't, so they won't). And the passion required to live & die as does this lot is better left to a more mindless youth. I don't know, it could be nothing more than I'm 25 years older and have taken into perspective my share of excitement: The World Series, Superbowls and NBA Finals. And somehow I've concluded I can't exist in a realm of all-or-nothing anymore.

But I can still watch the games, yes? It's all entertainment: The games, the crowds, the chatter.

Beyond that I'm working on getting a life, albeit at a safe emotional distance.

like grandfather, like grandson...

Prescott Bush in plot to overthrow the president?

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell House & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression.
So many angles from which to approach this. First thing that comes to mind is George H.W. Bush, the current occupant's old man and son of Hitler-lover Prescott. Interesting to me as so many used to call George Sr. "wimp". Given the givens here, I could only conclude him as a man who tried to be decent for much of his life, but was surrounded by scum from top to bottom to the side. (You remember Mama, yes? The vile harridan from Smith College?). And when you're a decent sort who wants nothing more than to get along, meanwhile all those around you brow-beat you mercilessly into kicking butt, well, you wimp out in compliance for little more than a moment's peace.

And then there's the grandson. Prescott would be proud.

Conyers: Three More Reps. and I'll Impeach
[O]ne of the excuses citizens often hear from lots of Congress Members for not signing onto articles of impeachment is that not enough of their colleagues have signed on and therefore "we don't have the votes." Well that just changed.
Lord knows I've been back & forth on this issue: The emotional vs. the practical. Well, given the previous post, I'd now say the emotional is the practical.

It's time.

and here's yer friday frolic...

Old-line Republican Warns 'Something's in the Works' to Trigger a Police State
"Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran."
I'd say this makes for a dandy follow-up to my comment about how the Oligarchy cannot allow the great unwashed to reverse its agenda of overwriting the last 70 years of the social order.

Here's more:
"I don't actually think they're very strong," said [former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan, Paul Craig] Roberts of his words. "I get a lot of flak that they're understated and the situation is worse than I say. ... When Bush exercises this authority [under the new Executive Order] ... there's no check to it. It doesn't have to be ratified by Congress. The people who bear the brunt of these dictatorial police state actions have no recourse to the judiciary. So it really is a form of total, absolute, one-man rule. ... The American people don't really understand the danger that they face."

Roberts said that because of Bush's unpopularity, the Republicans face a total wipeout in 2008, and this may be why "the Democrats have not brought a halt to Bush's follies or the war, because they expect his unpopular policies to provide them with a landslide victory in next year's election."

However, Roberts emphasized, "the problem with this reasoning is that it assumes that Cheney and Rove and the Republicans are ignorant of these facts, or it assumes that they are content for the Republican Party to be destroyed after Bush has his fling." Roberts believes instead that Cheney and Rove intend to use a renewal of the War on Terror to rally the American people around the Republican Party. "Something's in the works," he said, adding that the Executive Orders need to create a police state are already in place.
Like the ancient proverb advises: Eat, drink & be merry...

Update: Another sampling of that which may be "in the works":

Expanding Claim of Executive Authority, White House Official Tells Paper Staff Can't be Charged
George Mason University professor of public policy Mark J. Rozell called the administration's stance "astonishing" in the article.

"That's a breathtakingly broad view of the president's role in this system of separation of powers," Rozell told the reporter. "What this statement is saying is the president's claim of executive privilege trumps all."

Looking forward to the day I win the Lottery:

Flush with wealth from Broadcom Corp.'s 1998 public stock offering, computer chip magnate Henry T. Nicholas III made a few additions to his equestrian estate in Laguna Hills: hidden doors and secret levers, an underground grotto, tunnels and a 2,000-square-foot sports bar he called "Nick's Cafe."

But there was more, according to a claim made in court documents: plans for a "secret and convenient lair" with hidden entries for Nicholas to indulge his "manic obsession with prostitutes" and "addiction to cocaine and Ecstasy."

Personally I don't see it as either manic or obsessive so much as something to do.

right on time, i'd say...

Count me as one of those conspiracy theorists who believes that while Dubya and his Dick (or Dick and his sock puppet) didn't generate the attacks on 9/11, they did calculate the prospect, i.e., the intelligence warning Dubya received in Crawford on August 6th of that year, to be greatly beneficial to their radical plans to overwrite the last 70 years of social order in America -- so, in fact, they did nothing of significance to stop 9/11 from happening.

Keep that thought in mind as it looks now like we need a proper cover to bomb Iran now:
To American[s] who have grown skeptical of terrorism warnings, the professionals in the intelligence community say they understand. They also say this time, it could be for real.
And why not add a dash of martial law domestically while we're at it, eh? Suspend the Constitution -- like, officially now? Postpone all 2008 federal elections? I mean, we can't let the "great unwashed" reverse our best laid plans, now can we?

Stay tuned.

1975, as sinatra might say: it was a very good year...

No idea how I came across JoAnna Cameron's name, nor did I know it before today; or I probably did when I bowed down before the Goddess Isis on Saturday mornings way back when.

Not that I gave two gerbil-raisins about the plot or the production values, neither of which were worth note, but as a 16 year-old I was pret-ty-frea-kin' religious about this show -- and others that fed me the likes of Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith as Angels or Linda Carter as Wonderbuns.

Definitely beats Mass on Sundays.

Fellow adolescents in arrested development may recall her adventures appearing as inserts, sandwiched between episodes of the tedious Captain Marvel, he with the signature call more famously yawped by Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle: Shazam!

But who cares, eh? I just had to Google this teenager's crush, see what became of her.

Et voila!!

My, but how we've all grown!

file under "wow!"...

Keep in mind here that Betty Williams is the Nobel Peace Prize winner:

"Right now, I could kill George Bush," she said at the Adam's Mark Hotel and Conference Center in Dallas. "No, I don't mean that. How could you nonviolently kill somebody? I would love to be able to do that."

About half the crowd gave her a standing ovation after she called for Mr. Bush's removal from power.

For the record: Advocating the assassination of the president is not protected speech in America. But the vicera is not unlike when Sam Kinnison once said, "I do not advocate violence against women," and with a very toothsome grin added, "but I understand it."

One gets the sense the Obstruction/Impeachment brake-pads are giving way, especially now that Harriet Miers and Fredo Gonzalez have once again thumbed their noses at Congress, and in a most ostentatious manner. Repo Senators cannot stop a bill to Impeach arriving from the House. Although, whether a trial in the Senate can be filibustered remains to be seen. don't be so quick to snap up an iPhone...

Another example of consumer protection being a good thing (h/t to Open Left):

Our action urged Steve Jobs to unlock the iPhone from its monopolistic reliance on AT&T. Lots of people liked the action and it traveled around the blogosphere rapidly, particularly among activists who are concerned about AT&T's lead role in trying to eliminate net neutrality and its active cooperation with the Bush Administration in allowing the National Security Agency and others to listen in on our phone calls and review our emails without court oversight.
Personally I want one of them iPhones, although I intend to wait a bit -- for reasons practical (the price to go down) and philisophical (always wait a few generations for a better product). It is also assumed here that Apple will eventually open up the iPhone's interent accessability to beyond one evil empire corporation. But until they do that, I won't be getting an iPhone even if they were giving 'em away.

----------
Update: A more proactive approach:
It is in fact perfectly legal, according to a recent decision from the U.S. Register of Copyrights, for American consumers to unlock their phones for use on whatever network they would like. Apple is trying to take away that right by locking the iPhone to AT&T's network.

Sign this petition and add your name to the list of Americans calling on Steve Jobs, the President of Apple, to make the iPhone unlockable so that consumers can use it on networks other than AT&T. Then, forward the petition link on to some friends -- let's all remind Steve Jobs that the reason he's in business is because of us.
----------
Update II: Let loose the hounds!
Freeing the Apple device from AT&T is only a matter of time.

Early this morning, the worldwide crew of iPhone hackers who congregate on the IRC channel #iphone reported major progress in getting at the internals of Apple's once-locked-down new toy. They now have access to the filesystem -- or, in hacker argot, "we have owned the filesystem."

merry fitzness...

Naahmy, who once had two blogs of his own but now clearly prefers throwing peanuts at mine (for which, I must say, I am honored), asks today:
Why would Leahy gang up on Fitzgerald when Fitz was carrying the Dem's water for them? After all, the polls were against commutation, and this gives the Dems an issue. Why would he then call Fitz' conduct into question, esp. when no rabid right wingers are? Isn't that biting the hand . . .?
It isn't clear where Naahm got the idea Fitz' conduct was being called into question (except by loyal Bushies). More like Fitz has a unique and well informed take as to the on-going corruption that is the Bush administration. To wit:

Schumer: One thing, and I've spoken to [Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat] Leahy about this, that we're thinking about doing is calling Patrick Fitzgerald, the prosecutor, before us.

You know, he's not allowed to talk about what happened before the grand jury, but he did interview the president and the vice president, not before a grand jury, and [Fitzgerald] might have some very interesting things to say.

He issued a rare statement after the commutation that was very harsh in condemning it -- and with good reason. [...]

CBS: When would you like to see Mr. Fitzgerald come to Capitol Hill?

Schumer: Well, you know, this would be Sen. Leahy's call, but I talked to him about it yesterday and he seemed inclined to do it. It would be very interesting and we'd like to hear what he has to say. Obviously he can't talk about anything that occurred in the grand jury, but there's a lot else that he might be able to tell us. Because obviously, with the commutation of Libby, and with no one else meeting a criminal standard, but still something terrible being done in the name of an agent being leaked...we sure want to get more answers.

Simple.

libby's but a symptom of the disease...

Naahm de Plume, a.k.a., Commander Guy II, dares me to weigh in:

By lying about when he had heard something, in a context in which he had no meaningful role? Even the prosecutor admitted that Libby didn't out Plame. Yet Obama wants to demagogue the issue (obviously for all the people like the folks who turned out Pepper in Florida years ago, who were afraid of thespians and extroverts). This is why, IMHO, you cannot trust democrats with the judicial system. They are far more likely than Republicans to use it as a tool of policy implementation, and for political reasons.
Oy! Where to begin.

Perjury and obstruction of justice, I think -- I'm not a lawyer, are both felonies. And here is what the Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said after Libby's sentence was commuted by the Decider (not to be confused with the Judge):
The sentence in this case was imposed pursuant to the laws governing sentencings which occur every day throughout this country. In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing.
"Meaningful role"? Is that, like, a legal argument? And get your facts straight. Libby entered into a conspiracy and did endeavor to out Valerie Plame, he just didn't beat Richard Armitage to the punch as to whom and when he told. Moreover he was convicted of lying under oath and obstructing justice, that in protecting the lead, if unindicted, co-conspirator of the treasonous act of outing an undercover CIA agent.

That traitor to his country is Dick Cheney.

I'll repeat that: Dick Cheney is a traitor to the United States of America.

I say that realizing, of course, how utterly meaningless the word "traitor" has been rendered; bandied about as it has been over the last 7 years, and primarily from those who cannot comprehend dissent as vital to a democracy. Moreover, if the Constitution has been rendered meaningless, as it apparently is now, how can one break any law where only might makes right and America is regressed unto a nation of men? And yet, there it is. The man is a traitor. There, I said it again!

Libby's crimes go directly to covering up the vice president's treason, and the jury found him without credibility as to when or about what he spoke to the Veep on the matter.

In turn, the Vice President acted with the knowledge and consent, as well as the depraved indifference, of the President via his hatchet man Karl Rove, who, by the way, missed an indictment himself and by the skin of this teeth.

You cannot trust Democrats with the judicial system? Sir, you say this on the heels of an ongoing and most vile malfeasance being perpetrated on "the judicial system," and wholly by Republicans (and Joe Lieberman), beginning with Bush v. Gore to the de facto elimination of FISA, not to mention Habeus Corpus, to extraordinary rendition, to water-boarding, to Alberto Gonzalez (both as White House Counsel and as Att'y General), to the continuing obstruction of justice by the president, maintaining the cover-up of his own role in committing this treason by way of pardoning Scooter Libby.

But if it's a legal mind you crave, I'm rather impressed with Glenn Greenwald's:

We have the country we have -- one in which our most powerful political leaders are literally beyond the reach of the law in every sense, where we casually invade and bomb and occupy countries that have not attacked us, where our moral standing in the world has collapsed with good reason, where we are viewed on every continent in the world as a rogue, dangerous and lawless nation -- because we are ruled by a Beltway elite and political press that is sickly and cowardly and slavish at its core.
I suspect you might wish at some point to rephrase your "cannot trust Democrats with the judicial system" because it implies you do trust Republicans. And I don't believe that to be the case, because only a complete idiot, or someone equivalently corrupt, could ever trust these Republicans.

And I like to think, old friend, that you are neither.

now ask ME... !!

Dig this:
President Bush is holding private meetings "over sodas and sparkling water" in which he asks trusted advisers -- "Why does the rest of the world seem to hate America? Or is it just me they hate?"
See, Dubya's kind of trusted advisors can't be expected to say, "Why yes, Mr. President! You're disapproval ratings correspond precisely with the public's great antipathy toward you." Instead, the boy prez will get a pat on the head and a comforting "There! There!" And then they'll up his Ritalin.

For example:
"I find him serene," Kissinger said. "I know President Johnson was railing against his fate. That's not the case with Bush. He feels he's doing what he needs to do, and he seems to me at peace with himself."
We war criminals gotta stick together, y'know?

Sunday, July 01, 2007

madam, i think i love you...

Remember how Dubya insisted he'd bring "honor and dignity" back to the White House? His reference alluded to Bill Clinton's philandering as well as the renting-out of the Lincoln Bedroom to o'er n'er-do-wells, right? Well, the DC Madam is back in the news promising to release her 46-pounds of phone records to the public -- hell or high water:

Even if just 20 high-profile names are culled from her phone records, Palfrey says the White House would "implode" over the scandals.

"If what I'm saying is true and this goes to the heart of the Bush administration and the corruption the last several years, then yeah, I'll have an army behind me," Palfrey said.

Not wanting to pile on here... Okay, sure! I want to pile on. Ol' Texas Boot has been left with next to nothing to point to and call it his legacy now that the "honor & dignity" thing, i.e., as it pertains to SEX (because we all know he never had any honor, nor dignity, to begin with, did he, Commander Worf?), has now been driven into the shrubbery; the period to the Immigration Bill failure sentence.

Poppy & Babs must be so proud.
